1 Multiplying and Dividing Decimals by 10, 100, 1000

2 Answer the following questions in complete sentences.
Think about multiplying. What is true about the product (answer)? How does it compare to the numbers that you are multiplying together? Give an example. Think about dividing. What is true about the quotient? How does it compare to the dividend and the divisor? Give an example

3 The Basics of Multiplying:
When you multiply by 10, 100, or 1,000, you can move the decimal point to the right. The number of decimal places you move is the same as the number of zeroes you are multiplying by.

4 Move the decimal to the right: two spaces
Ex 1) x 100 Move the decimal to the right: two spaces 149.2

5 Ex 2)15.36 x 1,000 Move the decimal point to the right: three spaces Add a zero for the third space. 15,360

6 The Basics of Dividing:
When you divide by 10, 100, or 1,000, you can move the decimal point to the left. Move the decimal point once for each zero you are dividing by.

7 Ex 3) 2, ÷ 1,000 Move the decimal to the left: three spaces

8 Move the decimal to the left: two spaces
Ex 4) 4.2 ÷ 100 Move the decimal to the left: two spaces Add a zero for the second space. .042
