Dividing Decimals I CAN divide decimals by a whole numbers and decimals.

Parts of a Division Problem: 545 9 dividend divisor quotient

To divide a decimal by a whole number move the decimal point straight up and then divide as usual

25 7.5 Example 1 Terminating decimal is a decimal number that ends, or terminates in the quotient.

Let’s do a few together 11 4.4

Example 2: Showing the Remainder as a Decimal. 130 ÷ 20 Place the decimal point in the dividend and then move it up to the quotient. Add a zero to the dividend. Continue dividing.

Now you try. Hint: You may need to add more than one zero!

You try this…. 2 ÷ 3 Repeating decimal is a decimals that one or more numbers repeat.

Dividing Decimals by a Decimal I CAN divide decimals by a whole numbers and decimals.

To divide a decimal by a decimal move the decimal point in the divisor over to make a whole number: 45 1 35

Now, move the decimal point in the dividend over the same number of spaces and then move your decimal point straight up and divide 45 1 35

To divide a decimal by a decimal move the decimal point in the divisor over to make a whole number. Then you move the same amount of spaces in your dividend. 1.35 ÷.45

Modeling.35 ÷ 7

You try this…. Find each quotient. 1. 49 ÷ 0.7 2. 21.63 ÷ 2.1 3. 38.43 ÷ 6.1 4. 16.9 ÷ 5.2 5. John spent \$13.44 renting 4 videos for the weekend. What was the cost per video? 6. After driving 191.1 miles, the Changs’ used 10.5 gallons of gas. On average, how many miles did they drive per gallon of gas?
