Sound Familiar? You could be Estrogen Dominant

Two Main Hormones Estrogen and Progesterone

Estrogen The primary goal of Estrogen is cell growth and division. It grows good cells and bad cells. (The gas pedal--go, go, go!!!!)

Progesterone The primary goal of Progesterone is to balance out the Estrogen. (The brake pedal---stop, stop, stop!)

First half of your cycle: Estrogen grows a woman’s endometrial lining and prepares for egg implantation. It adds fluid and tissue to the breast in preparation for breast feeding.

Second half of your cycle: After ovulation, progesterone becomes the dominant hormone in the body. (If a woman becomes pregnant, she needs progesterone to sustain the pregnancy. In fact, estimates are that 70% of first term miscarriages are caused by low progesterone.)

It’s a balancing act! If we lack sufficient levels of progesterone to balance the effects of estrogen then we can experience the issues we mentioned earlier. Dr. Lee calls this “Estrogen Dominance.”

How do we get out of balance??

Dr. Lee lists four Balance Blockers: Toxic exposure Stress Poor diet Use of synthetic hormones

Balance Blocker #1: Toxic Exposure “Xenoestrogens are false estrogens (not found in nature) with toxic effects on the human body.” ~Dr. John Lee

We breathe in, rub on, and eat toxins everyday. Petrochemicals Air fresheners Fabric softeners Scented perfumes and laundry soap Personal care products made with petrochemicals Meat Supply Most domestic farm animals in the US are injected with Bovine Growth Hormone, a type of estrogen. We ingest the chemicals.

Hormones in our meat supply?? This growth hormone causes the animals to grow rapidly and retain fat and water. This increases their market value. “Unfortunately, we, as women, do not increase our market value when we retain fat and water.” Lisa Voorhies

Balance Blocker #2: Stress Stress depletes the adrenal glands and by itself can create imbalances among all hormones. Stress affects our bodies in a number of adverse ways.

Balance Blocker #3: Poor Diet We get too much: Processed foods Refined Sugars Carbohydrates We don’t get enough: Vitamins and minerals Vegetable Protein Fiber Healthy fats and oils such as Omega 3

Balance Blocker #4: Prescription Hormones (Birth Control Pills and HRTs) Synthetic Hormones are not natural to your body. Drug companies purposely make them different from natural hormones so they can be patented. Some hormones handed out by your doctor can be completely man-made and are found nowhere in nature.

How can I regain balance? Limit your exposure to toxins. Eat organic and limit petrochemicals in your home. As much as possible, reduce stress. Take a few minutes to slow down and relax.

How can I regain balance? Supplement your diet with essential vitamins and minerals, vegetable protein, extra fiber and Omega 3 fatty acids. Use only bio-identical hormone replacement and choose a non-drug form of birth control.
