» Heat and temperature are not the same. ˃Consider the picture below, both spoons are absorbing the same amount of heat. +But the metal spoon’s temperature is much higher.

» Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of a sample of matter. ˃Remember the kinetic molecular theory that states, “particles move faster when a gases temperature is increased.”

» Heat is thermal energy that is being transferred between 2 objects. » Which way does heat flow? ˃From objects with higher temperatures to ones with lower temperatures? ˃From objects with lower temperatures to ones with higher temperatures?

» The units for heat are joules (J) or kilojoules (kJ). » Heat cannot be measured directly. » We can only measure the temperature changed caused by a transfer of heat.

Things heat up or cool down at different rates. Land heats up and cools down faster than water, and aren’t we lucky for that!? The specific heat (c) of a substance is the amount of heat (q) required to raise the temperature of one gram of the substance by one degree Celsius. water = 4184 J / kg °C (“holds” its heat) sand = 664 J / kg °C (less Energy to change) This is why land heats up quickly during the day & cools quickly at night and why water takes longer.
