States Of Matter K 2.2 Changes of state

Changes of state Temperature – The average kinetic energy of individual particles Evaporation-liquid particles escape and turn into gas (not at boiling point) Motion may help to speed up evaporation. Temperature cools where evaporation takes place.

Changes of state Condensation-when gas particles slow down and liquify. As liquids condense, they release heat. Heat-movement of thermal energy from a higher temperature to lower.

Changes of state Thermal energy – the total kinetic and potential energy of all the particles in a substance Specific Heat – amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of a substance 1 degree Celcius

Changes of state Melting point-temperature where a solid becomes a liquid. Freezing point-temperature where a liquid or gas becomes a solid. Boiling point-temperature at which a liquid begins to turn into a gas. Liquid turning into gas-vaporization

Changes of state Melting point and freezing point are going to be at the same temperature. Heat of fusion-amount of heat required to melt 1 kg of a solid at it’s melting point.
