ENERGY IS____________________________________________. WORK CANNOT OCCUR________________________________! ----------THERMAL ENERGY-------- 1) ----------THERMAL ENERGY-------- We define thermal energy as---the total energy_ of the particles that make up an object (internal temperature) SIMILAR TO HEAT! THE ABILITY TO DO WORK WITHOUT ENERGY

Please match the picture with the correct state of matter. When you look at these particles you are looking at the particles’ ___________ state. The energy states we are observing are forms of ______________________. Lets make some predictions….please fill in the blanks. At higher temperatures particles move ______________which means ____________thermal energy. ENERGY THERMAL ENERGY FASTER MORE

What is the difference between HEAT and THERMAL ENERGY? Use the definition of thermal energy and all four of the following words (transfer, between, different temperatures, energy) Heat is the transfer of thermal energy between objects that are at different temperatures (exchange of energy).

Temperature- measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in an object (how fast are the atoms moving) Absolute Zero = 0 K, There is absolutely NO THERMAL ENERGY Temperature and Heat 3 Temperature Scales: REMEMBER! Thermal Energy is the total energy of the particles that make up a substance. It is involved in every energy conversion

Heat- transfer of energy between objects that are at different temperatures Conduction- transfer of thermal energy from one substance to another through direct contact Example: metal spoon in pot of boiling water

Convection - transfer of thermal energy by the movement of a liquid or a gas Convection Current- circular motion of liquids or gases due to density differences that result from temperature differences EXAMPLE: Electric Space Heater

Radiation- transfer of thermal energy through space

always thermal energy During energy transfers some energy is always converted into thermal energy!!
