Project Management - Objectives Explain how project management is related to proposal writing and strategic planning Define project success from an organizational perspective Identify and describe the five stages of the project life cycle Describe and apply scheduling techniques Analyze stakeholder influence and importance Describe key project management skills Apply precedence diagramming techniques to determine a project’s critical path

Project Management - Objectives Prepare a project charter and work breakdown structure to define project scope Explain project constraints and apply trade-off analysis Use risk management tools to help manage project risk Select and manage a project team Recognize common project management problems and discuss solutions Identify resources which can assist with project planning and management

Introduction to Project Management What is a project? Why is project management important? What do all projects have in common?

Project Constraints Understanding the linkages between cost, time, quality, and scope. Dealing with contractual and resource limitations, and utilizing trade-off analysis Quality Cost Time

Planning – Project Stakeholders Identification, building commitment, and balancing influence with importance

Planning – Team Development Typical team members include: Staff Members Board Members Consultants with specialized expertise Contractors Customers Government Officials Special Interest Groups Use Team Skills Matrix to create a balanced, effective team

Planning – Project Charter A Project Charter identifies and helps define a project. Includes: What the outcome of the project is expected to be Why the project was undertaken It may or may not name the project manager. Project strategy (who will be involved / consulted)

Planning – Project Scope Project Scope is all work required to complete the project and only that work. Should contain: The justification for the project (Why) The expected project product / outcome (What) Project deliverables (the major pieces of the product) Project objectives (quantifiable criteria which must be satisfied for the project to be a success.

Planning – Project Scope (WBS) Developing a work breakdown structure is a process of deconstructing major project deliverables into smaller, easier to manage components. Components which have been defined/ broken down as far as needed are called Work Packages. 1. Making Tea 1.1 Boil Kettle Put water in kettle Plug in kettle 1.2 Put tea bag in cup 1.3 Pour boiling water into cup Simple Example:

Executing Once planning is complete, consider factors in implementing the project: Delegation: Who will do what? Motivation Communications

What Defines Project Success & Failure Project management is successful when the project objectives have been achieved.
