Children and Physical Activity In today’s world video games have became a part of almost every child’s daily activity. We need to adapt to this social change and incorporate video games in the children’s physical education. It is proven that video games are said to improve a player's manual dexterity and computer literacy. So while our student’s are playing these games they will be going about physical activity, computer skills, and having fun all at the same time!

The Nintendo Wii The Wii is a type of video game console that allows the player to be cordless from the console and do different types of activities. Such activities include games you can purchase for the Wii; different games consist of Wii Fit, Wii Sports, and Just Dance. These games are made for the players to feel as if they are really performing different active tasks but in the game. The Wii can be purchased anywhere from $100-$200 depending on what acessories come with the console. Games can be purchased anywhere from $20-$60 depending on the controllers needed for the game.

Different software and equipment we can use The Nintendo Wii The Xbox 360 Kinect DDR Expresso Bike Model D Indoor Rower

The Nintendo Wii

The XBox 360 Kinect With Kinect, players can go rafting down rivers and twirling around roller coasters simply by leaning and moving their bodies in different directions. The Kinect even promotes physical activity with its “Your Shape: Fitness Evolved” game that allows users to sweat it out with boxing, tai chi and more. And with the Fitness Evolved virtual personal trainer, people have no excuse not to plan fun heart-pumping workouts! Kids can have fun while dancing, playing baseball, and being in the “virtual” world and getting a great work out from it as well! Kinects can be bought between $140-$400 depending on what other devices come with the console and games go between $20-$40.

Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) Dance Dance Revolution was the first video game developed in the rhythm and dance genre. This energetic, calorie-burning software is the latest weapon in the nation’s battle against the childhood obesity epidemic. To play DDR, players stand on a provided dance platform or stage and tap colored arrows laid out in a cross with their feet using musical and visual cues. Kids playing DDR is known to burn a lot of calories as the player jumps around a dance mat, following the colored arrows on a screen. Some people have claimed to have lost a few pounds playing DDR, as well as picked up a few new dance moves! DDR games can be bought for all different types of console such as Playstation, Wii, Xbox, or even a personal computer. DDR can be bought for about $20-$40 depending if you get the mat with the game.

The Expresso Bike Expresso Interactive Cycle engages riders’ mind and provides great workout while riders enjoy a variety of virtual scenic tours and games. Interactive technology offers outdoor cycling feel and engages riders mind and upper body with steering and shifting along with virtual terrain. This game provides real life effects for the player, for example when riding up a hill, first the player sees the hill then feels the resistance against the hill. This game would be a great benefit for kids in schools, however, it costs around $5,000 for one bike.

The Expresso Bike

Model D Indoor Rower The Model D Indoor Rower, is a machine that works your back and arm muscles. This machine has a game in its system called “Fish Game”. This game continues with each row the player pulls. The game begins when the player takes a stroke on the rowing machine. On the screen, the player is the fish facing the onslaught of good and not-so-good fish. Move the fish up and down the left side of the screen by altering the intensity of the row. This fun filled game ends with a finish line once time is up. This machine costs about $1,000

In conclusion… Having these different software programs and different equipment in our schools will benefit our students in more ways then one. First the kids will learn from the technology these different programs have to offer. Also, these aren’t just video games but they are a way of physical activity and exercise. Last but not least, these are fun and different activities to do instead of the normal routine in the gymnasium.
