Cellular Respiration Its how our cells release energy from food!
Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration. What is photosynthesis? It is the most important chemical reaction on our planet.
Energy All chemical processes in the cell require energy. Both plant and animal cells obtain energy from “ energy-rich” compounds, such as glucose (sugar)

Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

PHOTOSYNTHESIS Most important biological process on earth Fills food requirements & needs for fiber & building material – Petroleum, natural gas, coal, firewood Photo means “light” Synthesis means “to put together” Photosynthesis happens in the chloroplast in plants, some bacteria, and some protists.

The Equation Reactants Products Carbon dioxide + Water sunlight Glucose + Oxygen (carbohydrate) 6CO 2 + 6H 2 0C 6 H 12 O

Cellular Respiration

Where does it happen? In the Cell –Mitochondria “powerhouse of the cell”

Steps in cellular respiration 1.Sugar (glucose= C 6 H 12 O 6 ) from food is eaten. 2.Oxygen ( 0 2 ) is inhaled (breathed in from the water in some organisms). 3.Food is broken down with the help of oxygen through body chemical reactions (metabolism). 4.Carbon dioxide ( CO 2 ) and water ( H 2 0 ) are exhaled are produced in the reaction, which is energy needed for cellular activity. ATP

The equation Reactants Products Glucose + Oxygen Carbon dioxide + Water + Energy (carbohydrate) 6CO 2 + 6H 2 0+C 6 H 12 O ATP

CELLULAR RESPIRATION DIAGRAM MITOCHONDRION (IN THE CELL)

Comparing both processes You can say that the formulas for photosynthesis and cellular respiration are the exact opposite: Photosynthesis: Cellular Respiration: 6CO 2 + 6H 2 0 ATP C 6 H 12 O NOTE: ATP is produced in both reactions, but CELLULAR RESPIRATION produces all the ATP needed for cells to function.
