1 Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis
EQ- How do cells get energy they need to survive? EQ- What is the difference between photosynthesis and respiration?

2 What is cellular respiration?
The process by which cells obtain energy from glucose. Cells break down sugar and release the energy they contain.

3 Describe the process of respiration
Stage 1 Takes place in the cytoplasm. Glucose is broken down into smaller molecules. Stage 2 Take place in the mitochondria. The smaller molecules are broken into even smaller particles.

4 What are other types of respiration?
Fermentation 1.Anaerobic Fermentation produces ethyl alcohol. 2. Lactic Acid Fermentation- produces lactic acid in your muscles during exercise. Sugar  Lactic Acid + Carbon dioxide + Energy

5 How is photosynthesis different than respiration?

6 What is photosynthesis?
Plant cells use Photosynthesis to obtain food (glucose) from sunlight. Photo – “light” synthesis- “put together” 3. Cells that make their own food are called autotrophes.

7 Describe the process of photosynthesis
Stage 1- Capturing the sun’s energy Chloroplasts in plant cells contain a chemical, chlorophyll, that absorbs sunlight. This stage provides energy for the next stage much like a solar cell in a calculator. Stage 2- Using Energy to make Food Carbon dioxide(CO2) and water from the roots provide the materials needed to make sugar and oxygen (O2). Energy from the first stage is used to power the change to sugar.

8 What is the Photosynthesis Equation?
What are the materials needed to make energy using photosynthesis? What are produced at the end of photosynthesis?

9 What is the difference between respiration and photosynthesis?

10 Why are these process important?

11 Summary Where in the cell? Products Ingredients/ Reactants
Cellular Respiration Photosynthesis Explain how cellular respiration and photosynthesis are opposite reactions.
