1 Respiration

2 Respiration Respiration is the process by which cells obtain energy from glucose (sugar) During respiration, cells break down simple food molecules and release the energy that they contain. This type or respiration is referred to as cellular respiration (breaking down food) not to be confused with respiration (breathing – bring in oxygen)

3 The Two Stages of Respiration
Like photosynthesis, respiration is a two-stage process. Respiration occurs in the mitochondria of the cell. Respiration takes place in both plant and animal cells.

4 #1

5 Stage 1 Takes place in the cytoplasm.
Glucose is broken down into smaller molecules. Oxygen is not involved A small amount of energy is released.

6 #2 Takes place in the cytoplasm.
Glucose is broken down into smaller molecules. Oxygen is not involved A small amount of energy is released. #2

7 Stage 2 Takes place in the Mitochondria.
The small molecules are broken down into even smaller molecules. These chemical reactions require oxygen and release a great deal of energy. Mitochondria = powerhouses of cell.

8 #3 Takes place in the cytoplasm.
Glucose is broken down into smaller molecules. Oxygen is not involved A small amount of energy is released. Takes place in the Mitochondria. The small molecules are broken down into even smaller molecules. These chemical reactions require oxygen and release a great deal of energy. Mitochondria = powerhouses of cell. #3
