1 Photosynthesis and Cell Respiration

2 What do plants naturally need to survive?
1 Minute Quick Write What do plants naturally need to survive?

3 What is photosynthesis
What is photosynthesis? Photosynthesis is process that plants use where sunlight energy is taken in and converted to food molecules (chemical energy called glucose)

4 Which part of the plant absorbs the sunlight needed for the process of photosynthesis?

5 A Closer look at the Leaf

6 On the cellular level, where does photosynthesis take place?
How do plants get their color? From the light absorbing pigment, chlorophyll, found in the chloroplast.

7 The process of PHOTOSYNTHESIS occurs in two phases:
1. Light Reactions (Light Dependent) this occurs within the thylakoid (stacks) 2. Dark Reaction (Calvin Cycle / Light Independent) this part occurs in the Stroma (space)

8 Light Reactions

9 Dark Reactions (Calvin Cycle)
C6H12O6

10 Let’s combine the light reactions and dark reactions to create the equation for Photosynthesis?
C6H12O6 (Sugar) What are the reactants? What are the products?

11 Write out your correct balanced equation of photosynthesis.
Use your manipulatives to create the equation for photosynthesis (make sure you balance your equation) Reactants Products Write out your correct balanced equation of photosynthesis.

12 Does your equation look like the one below?

13 Check your understanding Explain the process of Photosynthesis to a neighbor using the following terms : carbon dioxide light energy glucose food oxygen gas process water chloroplast plants

14 There is a saying “If you talk to a plant, the plant will grow” Explain how that phrase is relevant and what processes are taking place. Do these two processes work in a cycle? Explain you answer.

15 Now let’s take a look at Cellular Respiration
The end products of Photosynthesis are what? Can we use the glucose in its current form if the molecules are bound together?

16 Cellular Respiration If glucose is used and energy is produced, where do you think cellular respiration takes place? What types of cells have mitochondria?

17 Mitochondria Mitochondria convert chemical energy stored in food (glucose, C6H12O6 ) into energy (ATP) that is more convenient for the cell to use. That process is called cellular respiration

18 Cellular Respiration

19 Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration are opposites
If the reactants for Photosynthesis are light energy, 6H20, and 6CO2 and the products are C6H12O6 and 6O2, what are the reactants and products for cellular respiration? (use your manipulatives) Remember, light energy cannot be produce so what type of energy will be produced? Reactants Products Write out your correct balanced equation of cellular respiration.

20 Does your Cellular Respiration Formula look like this one?
6O2 + C6H12O6 6CO2 + 6H20 + ATP (energy)

21 In your own words, explain what you think this analogy is saying?
An analogy can be drawn between the process of cellular respiration in our cells and a car. The mitochondria are the engines of our cells where sugar is burned for fuel and the exhaust is CO2 and H2O. Note that in a car that burned fuel perfectly, the only exhaust should theoretically be CO2 and H2O also

22 Check your understanding
Why do you think cells under go the process of cellular respiration? Explain the process of cellular respiration using the following terms: carbon dioxide food molecules glucose cells oxygen gas process ATP Mitochondria water
