1 Photosynthesis and Respiration 7th Grade Life Science
The Energy Cycle Photosynthesis and Respiration 7th Grade Life Science

2 Photosynthesis Materials Needed Sunlight Carbon dioxide CO2 Water H2O

3 Photosynthesis Who – What organisms can perform photosynthesis?
All plants Some bacteria Some protists

4 Photosynthesis Where – Where in the cell does photosynthesis happen?
Chloroplast

5 Photosynthesis What – What happens in the chloroplasts?
Sunlight is absorbed by the green pigment chlorophyll along with carbon dioxide and water A chemical reaction occurs that produces glucose C6H1206 and oxygen 02

6 Photosynthesis When – When does photosynthesis occur?
In the presence of sunlight

7 Photosynthesis Why – Why is photosynthesis so important?
Provides food for living things Provides oxygen for living things Regulates carbon dioxide in the atmosphere

8 Photosynthesis How – How does photosynthesis happen?
A Chemical Reaction Formula: 6CO2 + 6H2O + light energy C6H12O6 + 6O2

9 Photosynthesis Products Food (Glucose)
Some of which is used by the plant for energy Some of which is stored by plant in the vacuoles Oxygen Released into the atmosphere

10 Respiration Materials Needed Oxygen O2
Glucose (Food in the form of a type of sugar) C6H12O6

11 Respiration Who – What organisms can perform respiration?
All living things

12 Respiration Where – Where in the cell does respiration happen?
Mitochondria, the cell’s “power house”

13 Respiration What – What happens in the mitochondria?
A complex chemical reaction in which Oxygen and glucose are absorbed And then converted into energy that the organism uses As well as carbon dioxide and water that the organisms releases back into the atmosphere

14 Respiration When – When does respiration occur? Constantly
Living things always need energy

15 Respiration Why – Why is respiration so important?
Gives living things energy to reproduce, grow, develop, adapt, and survive.

16 Respiration How – How does respiration? A Chemical Reaction Formula
C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy

17 Respiration Products: Energy Used up by the organism
Carbon Dioxide and Water Released into the atmosphere

18 So, What’s the Connection?
Why are photosynthesis and respiration called the Energy Cycle? Because…The end of one is the beginning of the other. Each relies on the other to continue and all living things need this cycle to exist. The Energy Cycle is what makes Earth unique…the only known living planet.
