1 Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration
ENERGY ATP

2 Cell Energy (Photosynthesis and Respiration)
Energy for living things comes from food. Originally, the energy in food comes from the sun. decomposers

3 Organisms that CANNOT use the sun’s energy to make food—heterotrophs (herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, decomposers) Organisms that CAN use the sun’s energy to make food—autotrophs (plants, blue-green algae, phytoplankton)

4 Photosynthesis: energy of sunlight is converted into the chemical energy of glucose.
Photosynthesis occurs in plants and other organisms that contain chloroplasts. carbon dioxide + water + light glucose + oxygen 6CO H2O + light C6H12O O2 chloroplasts

5 Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts of plants

6 Respiration: energy of glucose is converted into the energy of ATP
Respiration: energy of glucose is converted into the energy of ATP. ATP is used to power all cellular processes (metabolism). Respiration occurs in ALL cells (plants, animals, prokaryotes, eukaryotes, etc.) and can take place either with or without oxygen present.

7 Aerobic Respiration: requires oxygen
Occurs in the mitochondria of the cell Total of 36 ATP molecules produced General formula for aerobic respiration: C6H12O O CO H2O + 36 ATP glucose + oxygen carbon dioxide + water + energy Eukaryotic cells contain a specialized structure – the mitochondrion – that generates energy.

8 Mitochondria—energy source of all eukaryotic cells , where respiration takes place (powerhouse)
Mighty Mitochondria drinks Monster Energy drinks!

9 Anaerobic Respiration: occurs when no oxygen is available to the cell
Also called fermentation (occurs in bacteria and yeast) Much less ATP produced than in aerobic respiration

10 Photosynthesis chemical equation:
Notice anything interesting about the relationship between photosynthesis and respiration? Photosynthesis chemical equation: 6CO H2O + light C6H12O O2 carbon dioxide + water + energy glucose + oxygen Respiration chemical equation: C6H12O O CO H2O + ATP glucose + oxygen carbon dioxide + water + energy
