The Ute Indian Tribe By: Breanne

Were They Lived The traditions of the Ute (Yoot) homelands were around the Colorado Platue. Their territory included present-day Colorado, Utah, and Northern Arizona. Most of the time they lived in the west. They would call themselves Nuciv. (Noo-Chee-oh)

Homes For many years they lived in Brush Shelters. Each would hold about 12 people. They started living in tepees after horses were introduced.

Food The men would hunt for large animals like Elk, Bison, and Deer. They would use spears, bows and arrows. Women would make gardens.

About Ouray Ouray (OO-ray) was a famous chief. He was born in 1833. He and his tribe which was the Ute had to fight to protect their way of life and land. Ouray saw how other tribes where mistreated. He became the leader who lead the Ute through the Hard times.
