Leadership A

Introductions 3  Tell me about your group….who are you?  Michelle Caine

Learning Objectives By enhancing self-knowledge and analyzing leadership styles, students will develop their ability to lead community events effectively

Agenda 5  Intelligence Quotient (IQ)  Emotional Quotient/Intelligence  Hospitality Intelligence  Servant Leadership

Rules of Engagement Immerse yourself in the experience Be sensitive to the learning journey of others Minimize distractions for the whole team Create a safe learning environment Enjoy!

Participation Questions- 2 Types 1. Large Group – all of us 2. Small Groups 7  Safe Environment  No wrong answers  Respect  So What? Questions  Safe Environment  Everyone shares answers  Select a recorder to write on poster paper  Select a speaker to share answers with large group

What is IQ?

Intelligence Quotient (IQ)  The Intelligence Quotient (IQ) test as we know it today has been used to measure or predict many things including academic and job performance  Testing was used in the past for many things – including restricting immigration and defending segregation – but also for helping lower-class students get into good schools and diagnosing learning problems  Based on the premise that intelligence is genetic

10 Be very quiet and answer the following questions BY YOURSELF…

Intelligence Quotient (IQ) Sample Question #1 Some months have 30 days; some months have 31 days. How many months have 28 days?

Intelligence Quotient (IQ) Sample Question #2 If you had only one match and you entered a cold and dark room, where there was an oil heater, an oil lamp and a candle, which would you light first?

Intelligence Quotient (IQ) Sample Question #3 How many of each species did Moses take with him on the Ark?

Intelligence Quotient (IQ) Sample Question #4 Take two apples from three apples. How many do you have?

IQ Controversies  IQ tests have been accused of being culturally biased. Less of a concern today as most test reviewers are sensitive to these concerns  Unclear if they measure innate ability or acquired knowledge  Studies in the 1980s and 1990s showed that there is less than a 25% correlation between IQ and career success  At best IQ scores may measure an aspect of intelligence  Best to remember what these tests can measure and what they can not

Multiple Intelligences In 1983 Howard Gardner proposed 8 types of intelligence rather than just IQ.

The More Intelligent the Better?  Does having a high Intelligence Quotient (IQ) make you a good….  Manager  Mother  Father  Friend  Student  Professional  Leader What does intelligence have to do with it?

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence (EI) Emotional Intelligence (EI) refers to a person’s abilities to perceive, identify, understand and successfully manage emotions in self and others. Being “emotionally intelligent” means being able to effectively manage ourselves and our relationships.

20 What is an emotion?

21 Eight Families of Emotions Enjoyment Anger Fear Disgust Surprise ShameSadness Love

22

23 Leaders who are attuned to their own feelings and the feelings of others can use their understanding to enhance the organization. Employee or “followers” happiness can play a major role in an organization or groups’ success. WHO CARES?

Daniel Goleman 24 In 1995, Daniel Goleman publishes “Emotional Intelligence” He identified four core aspects of EI:

25 Self-Awareness Emotional self awareness Accurate self-assessment Self-confidence Social Awareness Empathy Organizational awareness Service orientation Self-Management Emotional self-control Trustworthiness Conscientiousness Adaptability Optimism Achievement-orientation Initiative Relationship Management Development of others Inspirational leadership Influence Communication Change catalyst Conflict management Bond building Teamwork and collaboration Daniel Goleman’s EQ Skills

Why EQ Matters  Academic intellect isn’t enough…although academia is important  Technical proficiency doesn’t win the prize...although skills are essential  Self-management (control) and effective interpersonal relationships make the difference between success and failure.  Managers/leaders have a profound impact on the organization and group that they lead.

The good news is… “We’re each born with certain levels of emotional intelligence skills. But we can strengthen these abilities through persistence, practice and feedback from colleagues or coaches.” Daniel Goleman

How Can You Improve Your EQ?  Take responsibility for your life. Assume ownership for situations and the condition of your own like (internal locus of control)  Take a course in public speaking. It will help you practice self-management (controlling nervousness and self- consciousness)  Meditation/quiet time/prayer can help you relax and learn to manage your emotions.

29 What does Emotional Intelligence have to do with Leadership? What does Emotional Intelligence have to do with my Neighbourhood? So What?

Hospitality Intelligence

31 What is Hospitality

Multiple Intelligences

Hospitality Intelligence  Hospitality Intelligence builds on the ideas of Emotional Intelligence and is a subset of skills that are specific to the hospitality industry.  What do expect out of a Hospitality Experience?

2 of Many 34

Hospitality Intelligence “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” The Golden Rule, Isadore Sharp - Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts  The hospitality industry is very competitive and the difference is always the same: SERVICE  In the beginning, Isadore Sharp became an evangelist, preaching the gospel of service every hour of every day on every trip to every hotel, continuously restating it, clarifying it, developing it.  Sharp told his managers:  “Your success depends on the success of your employees. So your #1 priority can’t be what you as managers want. Your priority has to be, as far as possible, an environment and a structure that gives your employees what they want.”  “Your role, then, will be a leader, not a boss. Your job will be to bring out the best in all individuals and weld them into a winning team.”

Danny Meyer on Hospitality Intelligence “Over time, we can almost always train for technical prowess… We are hoping to develop employees whose skills are divided 51%-49% between emotional hospitality and technical excellence. I’ve learned that we need to hire employees with these skills if we’re to be champions at the team sport of hospitality.” Danny Meyer, Setting the Table – The Transforming Power of Hospitality in Business

Meyer’s 5 Core Emotional Skills 1. Optimistic Warmth – genuine kindness, thoughtfulness, and a sense that the glass is always at least half full. 2. Intelligence – not just “smarts” but rather an insatiable curiosity to learn for the sake of learning. 3. Work Ethic – a natural tendency to do something as well as it can possible done. 4. Empathy – an awareness of, care for, and connection to how others feel and how your actions make others feel. 5. Self-awareness and Integrity – an understanding of what makes you tick and a natural inclination to be accountable for doing the right thing with honesty and superb judgment.

“Hospitalitarian” “A hospitalitarian is someone with a very high “HQ”—or hospitality quotient. It’s someone whose emotional makeup leads them to derive pleasure from the act of delivering pleasure.” Danny Meyer

So What? How can Hospitality intelligence work in my community?

Servant Leadership

??? 41

42

43 Servant Leadership Leadership in which the leader transcends self-interest to serve the needs of others, help others grow, and provide opportunities for others to gain materially and emotionally

Servant Leadership 44 Servant leadership is leadership upside-down.

Servant Leadership 45 The concept was originally published by Robert K. Greenleaf (1970) in his essay The Servant as Leader. A person sees her or himself as servant-first, and through serving others and focusing on the needs of the group or organization is then transformed into a leader. Servant-leadership consists of an increase in one's service to the community, a holistic development of self, and the transformation of society.

Servant Leadership 46

So What? 47  How does Servant Leadership affect me and my role in my community?  What makes servant hood challenging?
