Binge Drinking

A drunken spree. Drinking alcohol solely for the purpose of intoxication. The consumption of five or more drinks for males and four or more drinks for females during one drinking experience in a two-week period of time.

Binge Drinking Dangerous to the drinker and to the people around him or her – They drink large quantities – They drink quickly – They do foolish, potentially deadly things like driving drunk, starting fights, and taking unnecessary risks of all kinds.

About 90% of the alcohol consumed by youth under the age of 21 years in the United States is in the form of binge drinks. About 75% of the alcohol consumed by adults in the United States is in the form of binge drinks. 5

Health Problems Associated with Binge Drinking Unintentional injuries (e.g., car crashes, falls, burns, drowning). Intentional injuries (e.g., firearm injuries, sexual assault, domestic violence). Alcohol poisoning. Sexually transmitted diseases. Unintended pregnancy. Children born with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders High blood pressure, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases. Liver disease. Neurological damage. Sexual dysfunction. Poor control of diabetes.

Alcohol Poisoning A dangerous toxic condition that occurs when a person drinks a large amount of alcohol in a short period of time.

Signs and Symptoms of Alcohol Poisoning The signs/symptoms of alcohol poisoning can be any of the following: The person is unconscious or semi-conscious and cannot be awakened. The person is cold or clammy and has pale or bluish skin. The person is taking less than 8 breaths per minute, or there are lapses between breaths of more than 8 seconds. Vomiting while “sleeping” or passed out, and not waking up after vomiting.

What to do with Alcohol Poisoning If any or all of the above occur: GET HELP IMMEDIATELY, CALL 9-1-1! DO not leave the person alone. DO turn her/him on her/his side to prevent choking in case of vomiting
