3 STANDARD DRINK 12 oz beer = 5 oz wine = 1.5 oz spirits 80 proof

4 BINGE DRINKING Heavy consumption of alcohol over a short period of time –Alcohol poisoning –Increases chance of becoming an alcoholic –Physical health – overweight, high BP, unintentional injuries, STD’s, liver disease, etc. –Mental health – higher incidence of dropping out, can’t concentrate, trouble sleeping, etc.

5 ACUTE ALCOHOL INTOXICATION (ALCOHOL POISONING) See emergency help when the drinker: Cannot be awakened Has a weak, rapid pulse Has an unusual or irregular breathing pattern Has cool, (possibly damp), pale or bluish skin

6 Involuntary regurgitation Person drinks more than liver can oxidize Pyloric valve closes (end of stomach leading to small intestine) Alcohol cannot escape from stomach Stomach lining gets irritated VOMITS Body’s way to try & prevent acute alcohol intoxication Unconscious person—position where airway is blocked hence asphyxiating on their own vomit
