3 Do Now  Write a short paragraph of what age you believe people should be allowed to consume alcohol? Support your answer.

4 Get the Facts!!!!!  About 41% of students have consumed alcohol by 8 th grade.  About 75% of students have consumed alcohol by the time they graduate high school.  More than 50% of 12 graders say they have been drunk at least once.  About 6% of youth ages 12 to 20 are heavy drinkers.

5 What is Alcohol? Alcohol: is a depressant that slows the central nervous system -Using alcohol 1.Slows reaction time 2.Impairs vision 3.Diminishes judgment

6 Alcohol -Found in beer, wine and whiskey. Alcohol effects a person physically and mentally.

7 Intoxication  A state in which the body is poisoned by alcohol and the person’s physical and mental control is significantly reduced.

10 What is Binge Drinking?  Drinking more than 5 or more alcoholic drinks in one sitting and increases the chances of alcohol poisoning.

25 How does Alcohol effect the body?  Heart: Increased heart rate; makes heart work harder  Liver: cannot regularly function; break down alcohol  Long term: leads to scarring of liver= Cirrhosis  Kidneys: increased urination, dehydration, headache, dizziness  Blood Vessels: enlarged, feeling of warmth  Stomach: Vomiting: which can lead to choking and death  Long Term: Ulcers (open sores) in the stomach and stomach cancer.  Brain: Motor skills are impaired and kills brain cells

32 Fetal Alcohol Syndrome -Fetal Alcohol Syndrome – caused by drinking during pregnancy; causes mental disability; results small eye slits in children, small head, delayed mental and physical growth (newborns are sometimes alcohol dependent, decreased muscle tone/coordination)  - completely preventable  -can also result in miscarriage  - stillbirth
