Lesson 3--Slide 1 Key Questions for Chapter 2 About prayer: Why and for whom should we pray? Who should pray? About women: How are women to show godliness and reverence? What is the role of women? What role did/does culture play in establishing doctrine? Lesson 3

Lesson 3--Slide 2 Church Conduct and Church Officials (Ch. 2-3) Godliness and Reverence of Members (2:1-15) Qualifications of Bishops (3:1-7) Qualifications of Deacons (3:8-13) Admonition to Timothy: Establish Orderly Conduct (3:14-16) Outline of Chapter 2

Lesson 3--Slide 3 What kinds of expressions are Christians exhorted to make to God? (1 Tim 2:1 NKJV) Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, (Phil 4:6 NKJV) Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; Supplications--specific needs that are keenly felt Prayers--general communications to God (Greek words has root of “wish”) Intercessions--prayers for others (e.g. “all men”) Giving thanks--expressions of gratitude to God Why and for whom should we pray?

Lesson 3--Slide 4 What is one example of those for whom Christians should pray? (1 Tim 2:2 NKJV) for kings and all who are in authority,... What is the ultimate purpose for that prayer? (1 Tim 2:2 NKJV)... that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. (1 Tim 2:3 NKJV) For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, (1 Tim 2:4 NKJV) who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. Why and for whom should we pray? -- Cont’d

Lesson 3--Slide 5 For what kind of things did Paul pray? For opportunities to teach and to do well with the opportunities. (2 Th 3:1-2 KJV) Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you: And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men.... (Col 4:3-4 NKJV)... that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ... that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak. (Eph 6:18-19 NKJV)... that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, Why and for whom should we pray? -- Cont’d

Lesson 3--Slide 6 For what kinds of things did Paul pray? --Cont’d For the spiritual growth and godliness of Christians. (Col 1:9 NKJV) For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; (Col 1:10 NKJV) that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; (Col 1:11 NKJV) strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience [steadfastness, NASB; endurance, NIV] and longsuffering with joy; Why and for whom should we pray? -- Cont’d

Lesson 3--Slide 7 For what kinds of things did Paul pray? --Cont’d For the spiritual growth and godliness of Christians. --Cont’d (2 Cor 13:7 2 NKJV) Now I pray to God that you do no evil, … but that you should do what is honorable, (Phil 1:9-10 NKJV) And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, (1 Th 3:12-13 NKJV) And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all, just as we do to you, so that He may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints. Why and for whom should we pray? -- Cont’d

Lesson 3--Slide 8 What is the implication of verses 4 and 6 on Calvinism (Unconditional Election/Limited Atonement)? (1 Tim 2:3 NKJV) For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, (1 Tim 2:4 NKJV) who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. (1 Tim 2:6 NKJV) who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time, (2 Pet 3:9 NKJV) The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. Why and for whom should we pray? -- Cont’d

Lesson 3--Slide 9 Who is the Mediator between God and men? (1 Tim 2:5 NKJV) For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, In what way did Christ serve as mediator? (1 Tim 2:5-6 NKJV) For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all, …. What role does Christ now serve? (Rom 8:34 NKJV)... Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. [A mediator makes peace; an intercessor relays messages.] Why and for whom should we pray? -- Cont’d

Lesson 3--Slide 10 Who is to pray? (1 Tim 2:8 NKJV) I desire therefore that the men [ a[ndra", males ] pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; What is contrasted with the desire for men to pray? (1 Tim 2:11 NKJV) Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. [The role of women is considered later in the chapter.] Who should pray?

Lesson 3--Slide 11 With what attitude should men pray? (1 Tim 2:8 NKJV) I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; In holiness (James 4:8 NKJV) Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. (Psa 24:3-4 NKJV) Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD? Or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, …. In faith (James 1:6-7 NKJV) But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; Who should pray? -- Cont’d

Lesson 3--Slide 12 How are women to show godliness and reverence? By their adornment and demeanor. (1 Tim 2:9-10 KJV) … that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness [ aijdou`", reverence in Heb. 12:28 ] and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. Apparel that is modest A demeanor that is reverent (respectful/ submissive) and soberminded (self- controlled) An appearance that is not showy A lifestyle of good works (1 Tim 2:15 NKJV) Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.

Lesson 3--Slide 13 How are women to show godliness and reverence?-- Cont’d By their submissiveness. (1 Tim 2:11 NKJV) Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. (1 Tim 2:11 ASV) … learn in quietness with all subjection. (1 Tim 2:11 NASB)... quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness. (1 Tim 2:12 NKJV) And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. Why are women to be in a submissive role to men? (1 Tim 2:13-14 NKJV) For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.

Lesson 3--Slide 14 What is the role of women? What are the general roles for men and women? (Gen 3:16 NKJV) To the woman He said: “… I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children; Your desire shall be for your husband, And he shall rule over you." (Gen 3:17-19 NKJV) Then to Adam He said, ”… Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life. In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground..." (1 Tim 2:15 NKJV) Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control. (1 Tim 5:14 NASB) Therefore, I want younger widows to get married, bear children, keep house, and give the enemy no occasion for reproach;

Lesson 3--Slide 15 GENERAL PRINCIPLE Relationship: The head of woman is man. (I Cor. 11:3) Reasons: Adam formed first. (I Tim. 2:13) Woman is from the man/for the man. (I Cor. 11:8-9) Adam was not deceived. (I Tim. 2:14) [None is related to culture!] Origin: Man is to rule over woman. (Gen. 3:16) What is the role of women?-- Cont’d

Lesson 3--Slide 16 In the Home Obedient to husbands ( Titus 2:1-5) Submit/be subject to husbands (Eph. 5:22-24) Be in subjection to husbands (I Pet. 3:1) In the Assembly of the Church Silence/not speak/ under obedience/ shame to speak (I Cor. 14:34-35) Among Christian Men “Quietly”/subjection/ not usurp/“quiet” (I Tim. 2:11-12) APPLICATION What is the role of women?-- Cont’d

Lesson 3--Slide 17 What role did/does culture play in establishing doctrine? Which of the following best expresses the influence of local cultural practices on Christian doctrine? ¶ Local cultural practices were bound on first- century Christian as doctrine. · Local cultural practices were regulated by Christian doctrine. ¸ Christian doctrine is completely independent of local cultural practices. ¹ Christian doctrine represents the unchanging will of God in the Christian era, but within the limits of doctrine it is sometimes necessary to let our actions be influenced by local cultural practices so that we do not offend others.

Lesson 3--Slide 18 From Chapter 2 Prayers should have spiritual objectives. Men should lead in praying. Women should show godliness and reverence by their dress, demeanor, and good works. Women are to be silent in assemblies of the whole church and are not to lead Christian men in spiritual activities at any time. Christian doctrine is not determined by local customs. What to Remember.
