Aims of this session:  To learn some helpful organisation strategies.  To learn about the ‘MENAI HIGH SCHOOL EXTENSIVE READING PROGRAM’  To plan the best time for YOU to study and complete homework.

One challenge in high school is finding the time to read widely. To help with this, Menai High School has a new reading program with great rewards!

MENAI HIGH SCHOOL EXTENSIVE READING PROGRAM

But Mum I don’t have any homework! Oh yes you do Barry. You have 20 minutes of reading to do. From Term 2 Week 3, every person in Year 7 has reading homework four nights a week; Monday to Thursday

Each night you must read something for 20 minutes. YOU CHOOSE

A MAGAZINE A NOVEL A COMIC A NEWSPAPER

Hey Mum, I just finished my reading homework. Please sign my school planner. Your parent signs your planner each night that you do your homework.

Friday mornings your Roll Call teacher will check your planner to see that you have done your reading homework.

Mrs Wakely will be checking whether you have done your reading homework so that you can be rewarded with……

Merit Certificates Premier’s Reading Challenge Points Champion Readers Movie Excursion

Another challenge is dealing with SO many subjects! Being organised can help with this.

 Write down what you think it means to be organised.  Watch the following video and write down the problems that occurred because students were not organised.

Being organised means...  You know where things are.  You know what you need to be doing.  You prepare the things you need for each activity.  You plan and allow enough time to get things done.

TIPS FOR BEING ORGANISED

TIP #1 Have a place for everything and keep everything in its place.

TIP #2 Use your student planner and e-diary to keep track of important dates

TIP #3 Each night, pack the things you need for school the next day

TIP #4 Allow enough time to complete homework or projects

Let’s make a study planner! Please turn to page 7 in your student planner

Step 1: Write your commitments into your weekly planner  Sports training  Music lessons  Dinner  Chores/Family commitments  Tutoring  Exercise  Reading time – 20 minutes/night for 4 nights a week

Step 2: Add the things you like to do each week These might include:  Favourite TV shows  Visiting friends  Listening to music  Hobbies  Rest

Step 3: Choose 4 one-hour slots for homework and home study and label these.

Step 4: Choose a person at home who will help you stick to your 4 study times Write down this person’s name at the bottom of the planner

Step 5: Choose a way to reward yourself for sticking to your study times Write your reward down: ‘If I stick to my study plan for a week, I will...’ ‘If I stick to my study plan for a month, I will...’

Reflection Write down two things you will change in your organisation strategies after this session. Write down one thing you were already doing to help yourself stay organised.
