Magnets and Magnetic Fields (85)

Magnets Any object that projects a magnetic field. 2 poles: North (N) and South (S). ALWAYS have 2 poles. Opposite poles attract. Like poles repel.

Magnetic Fields Nonvisible field that exert forces on substances sensitive to magnetism.

Cause of Magnetism Magnetic fields form because of the movement of electrically charged particles. Electrons moving in their orbits. Electrons moving through a wire (electricity). Natural magnets occur because they have electron configurations that produce a magnetic field. One end of each atom is slightly (+) and the other slightly (-). A bunch of these atoms together will form a magnet.

Magnet Superhero (84) Design a comic book hero or heroine based on the science concept we have just discussed. The superpower must relate to the science concept. Draw a single frame cartoon (4 colors minimum) showing the hero/heroine using their superpower. Write at least 4 sentences explaining how the superpower & your character relate to the concept. Do all magnets have a N & S pole? What causes magnetic fields? Why are some substances naturally magnetic?
