A ballad is a form of verse, often a narrative set to music. Ballads were particularly characteristic of British and Irish popular poetry and song in the later medieval period.

The ballad derives its name from medieval French dance songs or "ballares" which is also called the French Ballade.

Ballads originate from Scandinavian and Germanic traditions of storytelling that can be seen in poems such as Beowulf.

We talked about scops in the epic story Beowulf in medieval times there were scops who performed ballads.

In twelfth century Europe, there was no television, no radio or recorded music, no computers or telephones, no newspapers or magazines. Ballads were the main source of Entertainment. bored

Ballads we a communal thing as there were some high spirited folk or villagers who just entertained people by performing on the streets of a town or village

Ballads we apart of some families values for example the heads of families would perform them in front the family for special occasions like Christmas or in front a fire on a joyful day.

ballads were also performed in a form of opera in medieval times it was more of a genre of English entertainment.
