MALE GONADS (TESTES) By: Stefanos Roberts and Kody 1/8/14 6

LOCATION  The testes are suspended in a sac known as the scrotum.

Hormones Produced  The main androgenic hormone that the testes produce is testosterone. They also produce inhibin B, anti-Müllerian hormone, insulin-like factor 3 and oestradiol. <- DAT TESTOSTERONE!! So manly Such swole

What the Hormones Do  Testosterone is needed in the first stages of developing the male reproductive organs. It also causes the development of male characteristics such as growth of facial hair, voice deepening and the growth spurt that takes place during puberty. From puberty onwards, testosterone provides the main stimulus for sperm production.  Anti-Müllerian hormone is important in the development of the reproductive tract in a male fetus and is also produced by the testes and ovaries.

What the Hormones Do Cont.  Oestradiol is a powerful reproductive hormone that has a wide range of actions in both men and women. As a steroid hormone it has many functions, although it mainly acts to mature and maintain the female reproductive system. Men also produce oestradiol. However, levels are much lower than in women.

What Hormones Do Cont.  Both functions of the testicle (producing sperm and androgenic hormones) are influenced by gonadotropic hormones produced by the anterior pituitary. Luteinizing hormone results in testosterone release. The presence of both testosterone and follicle-stimulating hormone is needed to support spermatogenesis. Happy gonads :D

Side Effects of Steroids  Steroids makes your gonads atrophy and make it difficult to create semen, so stop cheating, baseball players!  Steroids actually don’t make your peepee smaller, but they do make erections hard to attain and maintain.  Also, they cause men’s breasts to grow. Gynecomastia IS THE BEST!!!

When The Gland is Not Functioning Properly It is known as Testicular failure. Causes include:  Certain drugs  Chromosome problems  Diseases that affect the testicle, including mumps, orchitis, and testicular cancermumpstesticular cancer  Injury to the testicles

Treatment for Testicular Failure  Male hormone supplements may treat some forms of testicular failure. Men who take testosterone replacement therapy need to be carefully monitored by a doctor. Testosterone may cause excess growth of the prostate gland and an abnormal increase in red blood cells.  Avoiding the drug or activity that is causing the problem may bring testicle function back to normal.
