MALE ‘NADS BY RIO JAUREGUI & MEGAN QUINN 7 TH PERIOD

LOCATION Paired organs within a sac of skin (the scrotum) in the male’s groin area Primary male sex organ

HORMONES PRODUCED Androgens, the male sex hormones, are produced by the interstitial cells The main androgen produced is testosterone Testosterone is a steroid hormone

EFFECTS OF TESTOSTERONE Important in the building of large molecules that make up bone and muscles Sparks primary (sex organs) and secondary (growth of facial hair, deepening of voice, etc.) male sex characteristics

FEEDBACK MECHANISMS & ANTAGONISTIC HORMONES Levels of testosterone that are too high can lead to a negative feedback from the pituitary gland Gonadatropin levels will drop as a response, leading to: Testicular atrophy Cardiovascular problems Baldness Acne

THE RELEASE OF TESTOSTERONE The hypothalamus and pituitary gland control amount of testosterone produced The gonadotrophin-releasing hormone in the hypothalamus causes the pituitary gland to release a luteinising hormone into the bloodstream, causing the release of testosterone

WHAT IF IT’S NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY? In men: TOO MUCH testosterone can lead to early puberty and infertility TOO LITTLE testosterone can result in less growth or no growth spurt at all, no facial hair, no growth in genitalia, no deepening of voice, loss of body hair, wrinkling of skin, loss of muscle, increase of fat, and mood changes In women: TOO MUCH testosterone can lead to increased facial/body hair, increased acne, balding, increased muscle, and deepening of voice

FIXING THE PROBLEM A testosterone deficiency may be treated by the use of testosterone or steroid supplements to increase the amount of testosterone in the body Too much testosterone, in men or women, is usually a sign of a more serious disease, and would be treated in a case-by-case basis
