Cyber Safety/Digital Citizenship Matthew Jonas

My Beliefs I am a strong believer in raising awareness in stopping bullying in schools. It is also important to inform people of the dangers that are out there in stopping cyber bullying and ways to prevent that. It is important to teach our children about cyber safety and know what is right and wrong when on the Internet. I want my children to have an understanding of the world around them and the dangerous people and places that exist.

The Polka Dots The Polka Dots are a New Zealand band which caters their songs towards kids. They have several songs geared towards cyber safety and ensuring kids are safe when online. This is a link to their youtube page. Their website is currently unavailable so this is a great start when trying to be informed of the dangers online.

Cyber 5 The “cyber 5” is a great activity I learned in one of my classes during teacher’s college. This is a fun activity to do with your students while teaching about cyber safety. The students outline their hand and write 5 important rules written on each finger. They can decorate it as they please, and then it is taped to the screen on their computer to serve as constant reminder. 1)Do not tell anyone your name or age. 2)Do not tell passwords. 3)Do not talk to strangers. 4)Only go on good pages. 5)Bad or sad, tell an adult.

NetSmartzKids This website exhibits fun games for students to play while learning about cyber safety at the same time. Students often get restless when being lectured to about doing certain things. These games provide a fun way to learn about a very important topic.

Stay Safe Online This is another easy to use website which has sections dedicated to parents, teachers, and students. I think the best part of this website is the breakdown on how to teach cyber safety to kids of all ages. Some things are only better understood when they are a little bit older, so each section breaks down what is appropriate.

Government website securite/index-eng.php securite/index-eng.php This is part of the government of Canada website. This website ensures all Canadians of how to act online and the different websites children are associated with today. The government takes this issue very seriously, so I think it speaks volumes if they can dedicate a webpage towards this serious issue. People need to be informed and aware of what happens. Everyone has pieces of technology, so it is nearly impossible to keep track daily on a person’s life.
