Some Names for the Internet Cyberspace The Web The Net The Information Highway The World Wide Web

Kid’s Rules for Online Safety Do not give out personal information such as address, telephone number, name of your school, city, sport teams, parent’s work place, passwords. Never do random chat. Only chat with family and friends. Never open an email from someone you don’t recognize. It may contain virus that will shut down your computer OR let someone use your computer without you knowing it. Visit age appropriate sites. Never agree to meet with someone you have chatted with online. Never send a stranger your picture or anything else. Do not share family photos without permission. Ask before uploading.

Privacy on the web All media is permanent. If you don’t want people to know about it, don’t do it, and especially don’t do it online. The words we say, the pictures we post, the places we visit make up our digital “reputations.” They cannot be washed away.

Communicate Ok to ask questions. Stay away from “adults only sections of the internet. Tell your parents about anything that makes you feel uncomfortable.

Are You Really You? Some of your online “friends” may not be who they say they are. It is easy to fake an online person. Someone who tell you “she” is a teenager could be a 50 year old man. Never schedule an offline meeting with an “online only” friend. Tell your parents if anyone tries to meet with you offline.

The “trail” you leave in cyberspace and on any form of digital communication is called your “digital footprint,” Your digital footprint may reflect positively on you as a person …or it may not. It’s is up to you!

Don’t be a Cyber Bully Just like there are bullies in the real world, there are bullies in the cyber world. The words you say online can hurt just as bad as being physically hurt.
