2 Back to School Safely Who we are Canadian Safe School Network is a national, non- profit organization that began in 1997 with the mandate to reduce youth violence and work towards creating safety in schools. Our current work focuses on trainings, presentations, workshops, and support to individuals and schools. We also create resources and have run in school programs.

4 Back to School Safely  School Safety  Your child may come into contact with a bully or see bullying happening  Bullying is NOT a normal part of growing up; it is not a rite of passage  Students should know the difference between “tattling” and asking an adult for help  It is never tattling when someone is getting hurt

5 Back to School Safely  School Safety  Types of Bullying  Verbal  Physical  Social  Cyber  Food Allergy  Signs your child could be getting bullied  Withdrawn, quiet  Loss of Interest  Physical Ailments  If you see your child bullying someone, stop it right away  Lead by example

6 Back to School Safely  School Safety  If you think your child may be getting bullied  Talk to them  Make sure they know not to get physical or to talk back  Gather proof if you can  Talk to their teacher and principal  Always approach the school calmly  They are your ally and want your child to succeed!  Find out the school’s bullying policy

7 Back to School Safely  Cyber safety  Our kids are “digital natives”  Kids as young as 8 or 9 have cell phones, facebook accounts  Parents/guardians should be aware of online activity  What is my child doing online?  Passwords  Rules  Checking in with child

8 Back to School Safely  Cyber safety  Personal information should never be given out online  Name  Address  School  Meeting someone in person from online interactions can be dangerous  People may create false accounts, use others’ pictures  Everyone should understand that what is posted online is there FOREVER

9 Back to School Safely  Cyber safety  Do not engage someone online who is sending threatening messages. Block them and ignore them.  Having as much proof as possible will help when approaching the school and possibly the police  If you or your child receives threatening emails, texts, pictures, etc. save the information!  Take a picture of the screen  Print out e-mails and text conversations
