The Short Story

Objective By the end of tomorrow, students will be able to: -Define literary terms as they apply to short stories.

Why? In order to analyze short stories, we will need to know how to talk about them. Once we know how to talk about these stories and the literary devices within them, we will move toward writing a Literary Analysis.

To Reach the Objectives (2 days) 1. Introduce and define each word 2. In groups- create a "word diagram" that will help others to remember what each Literary Device is 3. Share your "word diagram" with the class 4. Assess knowledge on all devices

Literary Devices

The main idea or message of the story. Theme

Plot The course of the story.

Exposition The part of the story where the author gives us background information.

Rising Action The part of the story that builds to the climax.

Climax The high point in the story when the conflict is resolved.

Falling Action The set of actions bringing the story to its end.

Resolution The "wrap up" or closure of the story.

Conflict The opposing force(s) between the protagonist and antagonist.

Protagonist The hero or good person in the story. The person you are rooting for as a reader.

Antagonist The force that opposes the protagonist.

Tone The author's attitude toward the subject of his/her writing.

Setting Where the story takes place.

Point of View Position from which the story is told to the reader.

First Person A story told from the "I" point of view.

Third Person The story is told from the "he" or "she" point of view.

Symbolism Something that stands for something else.

Short Story A piece of prose that can be read in one sitting.

Dynamic character A character that changes throughout the story.

Static Character A character that does not change.

Word Diagrams The Literary Device The Definition in your own words Specific examples from popular culture A picture that will help us remember this device

Group Activity In groups: 1. Spread OUT in the room and put your desks together 2. Create a word diagram with markers and paper provided for each literary term your group is assigned

Conflict The opposing force(s) between the protagonist and antagonist.

Take notes As each group shares, take notes on pictures, examples and definitions that the other groups come up with. Why? To help you remember the meaning of each literary term.

Reaching the Objectives Students will be able to: -Define literary terms as they apply to short stories. Assess yourself: How many literary terms do you think you can remember?

Take the Quiz Matching 1 to 1 Correct this with a high-lighter only.
