Where to search for journals SOLO “Oxford Collections” is the most comprehensive tool for finding journals. It covers Oxford’s print and electronic journals SOLO “Articles and more” covers a selection of electronic journal articles but is not comprehensive and omits some key journals

Viewing the e-journal Clicking “View online” opens the “Find Oxford” window listing databases that include your chosen journal. Check the date coverage beneath each database and compare this to the publication date in the article citation on your reading list. Once you have found a database that covers the correct date click on the title connect.

Restricted items on SOLO Some items on SOLO have a “restrictions apply” notice e.g. These are items which the Libraries receive via “Electronic Legal Deposit”

Legal Deposit The Bodleian Libraries are a “Legal Deposit” Library Legally entitled to a copy of every item published in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. Historically this has allowed us to amass huge printed collections In 2013 legal deposit was extended to printed items such as ejournals Picture: Bodleian Libraries closed stacks

Electronic Legal Deposit Restrictions The Legal Deposit Act 2003 imposes restrictions on electronic items received under Legal Deposit: Items may only be read on Library owned computers within the Bodleian Libraries Saving, copying and pasting is forbidden Each item may only be viewed by one person at a time

Avoiding restricted items In most cases you can avoid restricted items by choosing carefully from your SOLO results Available both on and off campus Digital copying and copy and paste permitted within copyright rules Available to multiple people at once Available from Bodleian Libraries’ computers only No digital copying / copy and paste Each item may only be viewed by one person at a time

Using the print version If the volume that you require is in the “closed stack” you will need to place a hold to ask for it to be delivered to a library. The date coverage is given above the list of volumes. Click + to check date coverage, availability and shelf marks. Click “view all items” to see the full list of volumes Click “Find & Request” to find out which libraries have the journal in print

Using electronic legal deposit To choose the electronic legal deposit version click “View online”. This will take you to a new page in SOLO where you will see a list articles from the journal

Looking for a specific article in an electronic legal deposit journal When you choose the ELD version you will be taken to a long list of articles in the journal. To find a specific article use the refine options on the left hand side e.g. by choosing an author.
