Density

The amount of matter compared to the space it occupies

Density of a pure substance at room temperature is always the same For example, water has a density around 1.0g/mL whether it is a drop, a cup, or a swimming pool full!

Quantifying Density We UNDERSTAND that objects made of different materials may have different densities, but how can we measure densities?

Density The amount of matter compared to the space it occupies mass volume D = M/V

You got a really good deal on a gold chain for your dad for Father’s day. The chain has a mass of 1000g, and water displacement gives a volume of 370 cm 3. Did you get a good deal?

We know that D=M/V. Let’s find the density of this chain and see if it is gold! mv D = 1000g 370 cm 3 = 2.7g 2.7g cm 3 cm 3 = The chain has a mass of 1000g, and water displacement gives a volume of 370 cm 3. Did you get a good deal? See p. 13 in your text

Characteristic property A feature of a material that can be used to identify a specific material How would you describe your teachers to your parents as they leave for Back to School Night?
