Characteristic physical properties

Learning goals We are learning examples of characteristic physical properties. We are learning to calculate the density of substances by using a formula.

Well, what are they? Physical properties unique to a substance
Can be used to identify a pure substance Density, freezing/melting point, and boiling point

density Ratio of a substance’s mass and volume
Units are g/cm3 for solid and g/mL for liquids Amount of matter per unit volume of that matter It’s all about the bass… I mean the particles

calculations Mass = Density x Volume

GRFS Given Required to find Formula Solve

Example #1 A sample of pure zinc has a mass of 4.50 g. It’s density is 7.13 g/cm3. Calculate its volume.

Example #2 Three grams of pure copper has a volume of 3.75 cm3. Calculate its density.

Example #3 Gold has a density of g/cm3. Calculate the mass of a gold bar that is 18 cm long, 9.21 cm wide, and 4.45 cm high.

Example #4 Calculate the density of a substance that has a mass of 4.5g and a volume of 13.5mL.

Example #5 Given the density of aluminum is 2.70 g/cm3, what volume would 200g have?

Example #6 The density of ethanol is g/mL. What is the mass of a sample with a volume of 125 mL?

Learning goals We are learning examples of characteristic physical properties. We are learning to calculate the density of substances by using a formula.

Please complete Textbook 5.6: #1,5,7,9,10.
