OBJECTIVES For students to compare and contrast different parenting styles Describe parenting skills needed for young children Understand effective parenting behaviors

Baumrind’s Parenting Styles Authoritative Authoritarian Permissive Neglectful

Authoritative This is characterized by a child-centered approach that holds high expectations of maturity, compliance to parental rules and directions, while allowing for an open dialogue about those rules and behaviors between the parent and child. Clear standards and Permissive Fear dampening a child’s spirit Encourage independence Warm and Responsive Explain motives for punishment/ more forgiving

Authoritarian This style is characterized by high expectations of conformity and compliance to parental rules and directions, that does not allow for open dialogue between parent and child. Unresponsive to childs needs Strict enforcement of rules with little flexibility More likely to spank child Child may lack social competence No questions asked Children may rebel against controlling parents if freedoms are not granted as the grow

Permissive This is characterized as having few behavioral expectations for the child and is characterized by warm affect. Parents are nurturing and accepting, but non-demanding. Responsive to needs and wishes Lack control of children Don’t regulate appropriate behaviors Want child to like them at end of day Children have low level of achievement Children are impulsive

Neglectful These parent do not care much at all for the child. Low in warmth and control Disengaged No limits Low responsiveness Only provide basic needs More focused on their own needs
