Lets Count Money!!! Kelly Goolsby

Content Area: Math Grade Level: 2nd Summary: The purpose of this instructional power point is to teach students how to work with money by learning how to count, add, and subtract monetary values. Learning Objective: Given a word problem and pictures of money student will be able to count, add, and subtract monetary amounts with 100% accuracy. Content Standard:CCSS.Math.Content.2.MD.C.8 Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many cents do you have?

This is a penny and a penny is worth 1 cent. This is a nickel and a nickel is worth 5 cents. This is a dime and a dime is worth 10 cents. This is a quarter and a quarter is worth 25 cents.

There are 100 pennies in 1 dollar. There are 25 pennies in 1 quarter. There are 10 pennies in 1 dime. There are 5 pennies in 1 nickel. There are 20 nickels in 1 dollar. There are 5 nickels in a quarter. There are 2 nickels in a dime. There are 10 dimes in 1 dollar. There are 2 dimes and 1 nickel in a quarter. There are 4 quarters in 1 dollar.

This is a 1 dollar bill and it is worth $1. This is a 5 dollar bill and it is worth $5. This is a 10 dollar bill and it is worth $10. This is a 20 dollar bill and it is worth $20.

If I have a 5 dollar bill, a 10 dollar bill, 3 quarters, and 1 dime how much money do I have? $15 and 75 cents $16 $15 and 85 cents $15 and 95 cents

If I have a 5 dollar bill, a 10 dollar bill, 3 quarters, and 1 dime how much money do I have? First I would add the bill amounts which are 5 and 10 and I would get 15. Next I would add the quarters and since there are 3 worth 25 cents each I would add and I would get 75 cents. Finally add the dime, which is worth 10 cents, to the 75 cents that you got from adding the 3 quarters.

If I have a 20 dollar bill, a 10 dollar bill, three 5 dollar bills and two 1 dollar bills, 6 quarters, 4 dimes, 2 nickels, and 4 pennies how much money do I have? $50.04 $49.04 $48.04

If I have a 20 dollar bill, a 10 dollar bill, 3 5 dollar bills, 2 1 dollar bills, 6 quarters, 4 dimes, 2 nickels, and 4 pennies how much money do I have? First add all the bills Which is $47 Then find out how much of each coin value 6 quarters are = dimes are =.40 2 nickels are =.10 4 pennies are =.04 Add all the coin values up =2.04 Finally add the coin total to the bill total to get the correct answer.

If I have $35.78 and I owe a cashier in a store $17.99 for my purchases how much money will I have left over? $18.79 $18.69 $17.69 $17.79

If I have $35.78 and I owe a cashier in a store $17.99 for my purchases how much money will I have left over? First line up the amounts with the amount you have on top of the amount you owe the cashier $ $17.99 In order to subtract the 9 from the 8 you have to borrow 1 from the 7 and give it to the 8 and you will have 18-9= 9 Next you will need to subtract the 9 from the 7 but remember you borrowed 1 from the 7 so it is now a 6. So in order to subtract 6 from 9 you need to borrow 1 from the 5 and it will be 16-9= 7 Next you will need to subtract the 7 from the 5 but remember you borrowed 1 from the 5 so it is now a 4. So in order to subtract it you will need to borrow 1 from the 3 and it will be 14-7=7 Finally you subtract 1 from 3 but remember you borrowed 1 from 3 so it will be 2-1=1

If I have $46.95 and I owe a cashier in a store $24.71 for my purchases how much money will I have left over? $22.24 $22.34 $21.24 $21.34

If I have $46.95 and I owe a cashier in a store $24.71 for my purchases how much money will I have left over? First line the numbers up with the amount you have on top of the amount you owe $ $24.71 First subtract the 1 from the 5 5-1=4 Next subtract the 7 from the 9 9-7=2 Next subtract the 4 from the 6 6-4=2 Finally subtract the 2 from the 4 4-2=2

Students should now understand the concept of counting, adding, and subtracting money. Students were taught the amount each coin and bill is worth; how to make a dollar with pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters; how to make 25 cents with pennies nickels, and a combination of dimes and nickels; how to make 10 cents with pennies and nickels; and how to make 5 cents with pennies. Students should now have a working knowledge of money.
