Content Area: Math Grade Level: 2nd Summary: The purpose of this instructional power point is to teach students how to work with money by learning how to count, add, and subtract monetary values. Learning Objective: Given a word problem and pictures of money student will be able to count, add, and subtract monetary amounts with 100% accuracy. Content Standard:CCSS.Math.Content.2.MD.C.8 Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many cents do you have?

This is a penny and a penny is worth 1 cent. This is a nickel and a nickel is worth 5 cents. This is a dime and a dime is worth 10 cents. This is a quarter and a quarter is worth 25 cents.

There are 100 pennies in 1 dollar. There are 25 pennies in 1 quarter. There are 10 pennies in 1 dime. There are 5 pennies in 1 nickel. There are 20 nickels in 1 dollar. There are 5 nickels in a quarter. There are 2 nickels in a dime. There are 10 dimes in 1 dollar. There are 2 dimes and 1 nickel in a quarter. There are 4 quarters in 1 dollar.

Next I would add the quarters and since there are 3 worth 25 cents each I would add and I would get 75 cents. So in order to subtract 6 from 9 you need to borrow 1 from the 5 and it will be 16-9= 7 Next you will need to subtract the 7 from the 5 but remember you borrowed 1 from the 5 so it is now a 4. So in order to subtract it you will need to borrow 1 from the 3 and it will be 14-7=7 Finally you subtract 1 from 3 but remember you borrowed 1 from 3 so it will be 2-1=1

Students should now have a working knowledge of money.
