Lesson 4 Mini-lesson: Adding and Subtracting Tenths and Hundredths

ADDING tenths and hundredths

1/10 of a dollar is a DIME If you have a half a dollar, what fraction of a dollar do you have? What if you have 2 quarters? How many dimes would represent the same amount? How would you represent that as a fraction? How many pennies? Fraction? Dimes Fraction of a dollar 1/10

1/10 is equivalent to 10 / 100 = Adding tenths and hundredths.

How can we add 1/10 and 1/100? Adding tenths and hundredths 1/10 = 10/100 so: 10/100 + 1/100 = 11/100 (1 dime) (10 pennies) (10 pennies) (1 penny) ( 11 pennies) Make an Equivalent fraction.

Think about money to check your answer. 11/100 = 11 cents, right? 1/10 + 1/100 = 11 cents ! Check your answer

3/10 + 1/100 = 30/100 + 1/100 = 31/100 Add These Fractions

8/10 80/100 = You can also think about 1/10 and 1/100 using a grid

Add these fractional parts 7/10 55/100 + + = 125/100 (70/100) (55/100) =

4/10 33/100 Add these fractional parts = = + + 73/100

a.4/10 + 5/100 = b.6/10 + 3/100 = c.5/100 + 9/10 = d.10/10 + 50/100 = e.13/10 + 7/100 = Add These Fractions PRACTICE

a.3/10 + 7/100 = b.9/10 + 5/100 = c.8/100 + 8/10 = d.10/10 + 31/100 = e.15/10 + 3/100 = Add These Fractions Exit Slip
