 Know that we know what the value of the coins, lets start counting!  We will first watch a video to better help you understand.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UU89SxQoFRA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UU89SxQoFRA

 First you need to find a partner.  Next I will each hand you and your partner change, and it is your job to come up with as many ways as possible to make your change equal one dollar.  Examples: .25+.25+.25+.25= $1 = 4 quarters  I will give you ten minutes to come up with examples and you will present to the class what you come up with.

 Name some examples of what you came up with?  4 quarters= 1 dollar  10 dimes= 1 dollar  20 nickels = 1 dollar  2 quarters + 5 dimes = 1 dollar  3 quarters + 5 nickels = 1 dollar  9 dimes + 10 pennies = 1 dollar  As you can see, there are many possibilities to make one dollar with change. Here are just a few I came up with.

 Since in the beginning of the lesson I asked you how many people loved money, and you all answered you did.  I will now hand each student 3 quarters and an envelope. You will first write your name on the envelope, and this will serve as your wallet. Then place your coins in your wallet.  Throughout the day I will either be taking away 25 cent for misbehavior or adding 25 for good behavior. At the end of the day you will be able to shop for small prizes and spend your money.  I will do this everyday for the first half of school!

 What have you all learned?  Are there any questions you may have?  Do you understand the value of money?  Do you understand place value and decimals?

 Now that you are prepared with our Money Lesson, I will give you a short quiz to test that. Take out a sheet of paper and write your name at the top along with the date. 1. How much is a dime worth? Write it out and put in decimal form? 2. What coin is worth 5 cents? 3. How many pennies does it take to make 1 dollar? 4. What coin is this? And how much is it worth? 5. Name 5 different ways to make change equal a dollar.

 When you are finished with your quiz, flip your paper over and do not talk. I will collect them when everyone is done!  Give yourselves a pat on the back for working so hard today!  Be on your best behavior so you can go shopping at the end of the day and pick out some goodies!
