The Colonial Period (1607-1775) Kylie, Brittani, Chantell

The Roots The American Education started in Jamestown colony. Formal education was reserved for wealthy white males, and ignored females, people of color, and less wealthy. Parents thought that the most important thing for their children was to learn christianity so they would learn to read the bible.

Southern Colonies Georgia, Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina were all about agriculture If you weren’t wealthy you wouldn’t go to school at all (no public school).

Importance of Education in the Colonies By learning to read and write, people gained access to God’s word through the bible. Education was important because it made people more righteous, industrious, resourceful and thrifty.

Middle Colonies New York, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania Middle Colonies are more diverse than Southern Colonies Schools for every religion, culture, and language. They had more religions, cultures,

The New England Colonies Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire Religion played a large part in this time in schools

Uniforms Girls would wear dresses and skirts with an apron. Boys had to wear dresses until they were 7, which meant they were growing up and then would wear pants.

How the children were taught By hands on reading and writing. Girls were taught how to cook and clean. Boys were taught how to read and write.

Education for Girls and Boys Mostly upper class people would actually receive and education, and they would learn reading, writing, simple math, poems and prayers. They didn’t have a lot of paper or textbooks so they would recite their lessons until they memorized them. (www.chesapeake.edu)

Teaching in Colonial Schools Religion influenced the curriculum and the instruction Focus on the 4 R’s Reading Writing Arithmetic Religion

Teaching in Colonial Schools (Cont) Students were not allowed to ask questions or express opinions The students must sit in their seat for long periods of time, quietly Almost all teachers were men

Old Deluder Satan Act (1647) Required every town 50+ to hire a teacher of reading and writing. This influenced public education to begin. Why was it made for real? Produce citizens who understood the Bible and could thwart Satan’s Trickery.

The Influences of Europe Humane Child-centered Practical view of education Philosophers planted the seed of educational change that would change education forever.

European Philosophers John Amos Comenuis (1592-1670) Questions the effectiveness of memorization and recitation. John Locke (1632-1704) Emphasized the importance of firsthand experiences Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) Opportunities for exploration and experimentation Jobann Pestalozzi (1746-1827) Criticized authoritarian educational practices

Why is Colonial Period awesome? Shaped today education Source of inequality in American schools (with exceptions) Laid foundation for public education Helps why religion continues to be important in education today
