3 Questions Why were the Europeans able to conquer the Native Americans? How was Colonial life defined by geography? How can we describe the Colonial economy? What was a major theme of Colonial government?

4 Conquering Native Americans Europeans were able to conquer Native Americans for many reasons. Europeans had superior weapons and technology which were unknown to Natives. The Natives groups were divided amongst themselves. The Europeans brought new diseases which the Natives could not resist.

5 Colonial Life Colonial Life differed depending on where you lived. New England developed as a center for making goods. The Middle Colonies had medium sized farms and depended on trade. The Southern Colonies had large plantations and needed slaves to work on these plantations.

7 Colonial Economies The Colonies depended on trade with Europe. The Colonies sent tobacco, rice, fish, cotton and other natural resources to Europe. In Europe these resources become manufactured goods and were sent back to the Colonies.

8 Colonial Government The English colonists brought with them strong traditions of individual rights and limited self government. Magna Carta 1215- gave rights to English citizens. Parliamentary rule 1600’s- divided power with the King of England Mayflower Compact 1620- Colonists agreed to a government that obtained its power from the people. Virginia House of Burgess- First representative government in the Colonies.
