Basic Information – NIMA Products Basic Information – NIMA Products and Services for Army Units The majority of mapping and imagery products products used by the Army are produced by NIMA. These products and services are primarily distributed by the Defense Logistics Agency. There is no charge to Military or DoD customers for these products. Mapping and Imagery products are ordered through supply channels per AR Some are provided direct to the user by NIMA. Additionally, a number of the products are available via the unclassified and classified web. This reference provides information about important services and products you may need. Unclassified - For Official Use Only Ordering NIMA Products NIMA products are ordered through Army supply channels. DLA also supports ordering online on their website Please note: there isn’t a robust tracking method for products ordered through the web page. An illustrated, detailed reference about ordering NIMA products is at under reference materials. A complete list of catalogs is on DLA’s website at: DLA’s softcopy version of all the catalogs is on CD: NIMA Ref. No. CATCDLIMDIS NSN Some catalogs may be out of stock until the digital version is in place. Call Customer Service Office at for more information. Automatic Distribution This ensures new copies of products you select are sent to your unit each time they come out. To get on automatic distribution, make an initial order through unit central supply for the complete set of the needed products. Units that deploy frequently should be on automatic distribution directly, rather than having their products sent to their higher headquarters. These products can be ordered by the NIMA numbers rather than the NSN. Instead of using A0A as your document identifier code, use A0D (A)D-requisition for domestic (CONUS) shipment / with part number) or AO4 (A04- requisition for overseas (OCONUS) shipment / with part number. In this case the NIMA reference number (NRN) is the part. Rules for the document identifier code (DIC) can be found on the DLA mapping facility website at: More information on the rules can be viewed by clicking “DIC" on the menu. Automatic distribution will provide updates to a product, but not its initial issue, once the initial order is made, request automatic distribution requirements by FAX containing the unit DODACC number to DSN or commercial Download a sample form at: Note: this form can also be used to add or delete items or change the quantity of products on automatic distribution. Make the request to the attention of the subscription department. The initial request is not made to DLA, only the automatic distribution request. Digital Products for Data Display Systems ARC Digital Raster Graphic (ADRG) and Compressed ARC Digital Raster Graphic (CADRG): This are scanned version of paper maps. The listing of the available CADRG on CD is provided in the digital bulletin digest, NIMA reference number CATP7QB, NSN Order a complete set (about 90 CD’s) or only the CD’s covering your units AOR. A new edition of these CD’s are normally issued once a year. Until then, NIMA provides a monthly update called the CADRG supplemental disk. This provides frame file updates to the charts contained on the original CADRG CDs and provides new charts not on the original CDs. If your are using a data display system you should be on automatic distribution for both products. NOTE: ADRG is a digital image of charts that have not been compressed. There is one chart per ADRG CD. C2PC can read either ADRG or CADRG, some maps may be available only in ADRG format. If a map is not originally WGS84, maps on ADRG or CADRG CDs are converted to WGS84 when they are produced, although the grid lines will reflect the maps original datum. CADRG (Compressed ARC digitized raster graphic), NIMA reference number CDRGXALL contains hardcopy maps over an area scanned and written to CD. The majority of the maps will be 1:250,000 to 1:1,000,000 scale. 1:50 and 1:100 map coverage is not present in all areas. CADRG update – NIMA reference number CDRGAUPD NSN This product is produced monthly and provides the latest updates. The only way to receive this product is to be on automatic distribution. ECHUM files are included as well. DTED– (Digital Terrain Elevation Data) NIMA reference number for DTED 1 and 2 - TCDXXALL this product provides a general elevation surface to be used for fly-thru generation, line of sight, perspective scene and 3d visualization. It is a series of latitude, longitude and elevation readings regularly spaced intervals, 100m for DTED1 and 30m for DTED2. To see DTED available visit the individual NSN’s for DTED1 should be used if only DTED1 is needed rather than TDCXXALL. More information about DTED is available at ( under reference material/DTED.) CIB5 – (Controlled Image base) this product is national satellite imagery processed so the resolution is reduced to approximately 5m. This product is unclassified, limited distribution. It can be used on data display systems to substitute for a 1:50 or 1:100 map product when none is available. A complete set of this product would be over 300 cd’s so units should order only areas of interest. To see the CIB5 available over your area of interest see page 147 of CATP7QB. Spreadsheets showing existing CIB data and stock numbers for ordering the product from DLA are available from members of NIMA’s customer support teams.

The official release of MicroDEM 5.0 provides access to new data types and significant new capabilities for users of TerraBase II. TerraBase II version 3.0, MicroDEM 4.0 and MicroDEM 5.0 software and training materials may be downloaded free from the Terrain Visualization Center Web Site at: Falconview/PFPS Falconview is a free software program originally designed for flight planning. It is an excellent data display tool and has a 3d fly thru capability. The original version N-PFPS has flight planning functionality, the NIMA version (NIMA stock number: SFTWRFAL CONVIEW ed 311, NSN ) has just the data display functions. Aviation units shouldn’t be using the NIMA version of Falconview. Route functionality is removed. Datum Conversions NIMA provides the DoD approved software for datum conversions Digital Data for Download NIMA data can be viewed and downloaded on line at NIMA secure web sites. Use Raster Roam to see what NIMA products are available in an area and download them in various formats. (help sheet under reference materials) This process also works well for making briefing slides. Data Release Issues Most of NIMA data is Limited Distribution. This data is unclassified, but it isn’t meant for use by the general public. Limited Distribution data can only be used by US Military, DoD civilians and DoD contractors (for a specific purpose under their contract). It can’t be shared with foreign nationals without approval from NIMA. Contact your customer support team for more information. Unclassified - For Official Use Only Foreign Clearance Guide NIMA no longer prints the foreign clearance guide (FCG), However DLA still distributes it. The USAF is the DoD executive agent for its production, view it online at: Additional distribution instructions are in chapter two. Airfield Information AAFIF – (Automated Air Facilitates Information File, Airfield data) this product provides information about airfields - everything "inside the fence" -- runways, aprons, hangars, fuel storage, etc. The product comes in a secret or an unclassified version. With that, users can query and print unclassified formatted reports as well as printing unclassified graphics of airfield layouts with annotations keyed to the database. This product is distributed directly by NIMA. To get on distribution contact the AAFIF Program Manager, DSN , COM , AAFIF is also available for download on SIPRNET and JDISS. A 1 page reference sheet describing how to use AAFIF on CD as well as on secure systems is at the NIMA liaison to USMC www page at under reference materials. Training If your unit needs training in the use of NIMA products, and related issues such as grids, datums and datum conversions have your training coordinator contact the Defense Mapping School Operations Office at com: DSN: They offer free classes at their facility at Ft. Belvoir VA in addition to providing mobile training teams that will travel to customer sites at NIMA’s expense. Training can be tailored to the needs of the specific unit. Non NIMA products NIMA purchases USGS products to provide coverage of the United States not covered by NIMA, such as areas outside of military bases and provides them at no charge to military customers for exercises and training. Be advised that the quality and quantity of mapping products available in the US and other ‘first world’ countries aren’t available in a less industrialized countries. Make sure your unit allows the use of USGS products for exercises. Visit the USGS website and obtain the stock numbers of the products you need. Contact the NIMA Army customer support division at (703) if you need USGS products. For area outside of the US, contact your customer support team for available locally produced products. Assistance for Army customers NIMA’s Army customer support division, can be reached at DSN ; (703) NIMA technical representatives supporting Army issues are located at various CONUS installations to help customers resolve data issues. Operational requirements are handled by your respective command. Basic Information - NIMA Products and Services for Army Units For additional information and the current “Maplines” see -
