Year Three Information General Overview of Year Three Option Periods in Year Three Graduation Requirements Policies and Procedures for Electives

Year Three Consists of.. Six Clinical Clerkships Long Clerkships (10 Weeks each): – Internal Medicine – Surgery Short Clerkships (6 Weeks each): – Family & Community Medicine – Psychiatry – Pediatrics – Obstetrics/Gynecology

Year Three Consists of.. Year Three Orientation will be held: – Monday, July 6, 2015 at 8:00AM – Mandatory

Year Three Consists of.. Medical Humanities Clerkship – Two Weeks – “Physician/Patient Relationship” Doctoring Geriatric Initiative Year Three Empathy Sessions Two Weeks of Holiday Break Two Option Periods of 2-Weeks Each – A Total of 4 weeks per Student

Y3 Option Periods: Long Clerkships First: – Weeks 11 & 12 (9.14 & ) – Weeks 39 & 40 (3.28 & ) Short Clerkships First: – Weeks 39 & 40 (3.28 & ) – Weeks 41 & 42 (4.11 & )

Y3 OPTION PERIODS Students can schedule: – Vacation – Remediation – Research – Electives – Neurology Clerkship

Y3 Scheduling of Option Weeks Neurology Clerkship Students considering Neurology as a career will be given preference when scheduling the Neurology Clerkship. Contact the Tammy Boyd ( ) to schedule an appointment to talk with Dr. Rauschkolb Appointments: March 19 – 27, 2015

Y3 Scheduling of Option Weeks Averages from Class of : Vast majority took at least a portion of their Option Periods for Vacation (roughly 60%) All four weeks taken as Vacation = 6% No vacation taken = 35% (including Neurology Clerkship students)

Y3 Scheduling - Electives Electives (81): – Traditional Electives (46) – Basic Science Electives (35) Maximum Course Length = 2 Weeks No Off-Campus Electives in Year 3

Electives - Credits Year Three Elective Catalog: – Vary in length: ½ time to full-time 1 to 2 weeks Credit earned at 1 credit per 1 week full-time course. – 1 Week Full-Time Elective = 1 Credit – 2 Weeks Full-Time Elective = 2 Credits – 2 Weeks ½-Time Elective = 1 Credit – 1 Week ½-Time Elective = 0.5 Credit

Year Three Electives - Credit Student Performance Evaluation for Electives is based on ACGME Core Competencies (See copy in your packet--Forms) Following completion of an Elective, students must complete Course Feedback form online (See copy in your packet & link on Y3 Webpage)

Year Three Electives - Credit Credits for Elective Courses taken in Y3 will apply toward Elective Requirements for Graduation However, they will not satisfy the Y4 requirement for an Intensive Clinical Elective (ICE)

Important Deadlines... Week of March 30: Registration opens for Clerkships April 20 : Preliminary schedules available online May 22: Deadline for Option Period Requests June 1: Complete schedules available online

Important Deadlines... March 19 – 27: Students considering Neurology as a career and are interested in taking the Neurology Clerkship during the Y3 Option Periods must meet with Dr. Rauschkolb. (NOTE: Must take Short Clerkships first)

SCHEDULING Review the List of Electives for courses that interest you A comprehensive list of courses for Y3 is attached to the Registration form Go to the Electives Catalog to review the complete description of the courses Select courses you would like to take and put them in order of priority (See Sample in packet)

SCHEDULING Check Prerequisites Make certain you will meet ALL Prerequisites by the time you are scheduled for your Option Period Notification Requirement = Student must contact faculty in advance of start date – length of time varies - IMPORTANT

SCHEDULING On the Scheduling Request Form (BY WEEK) INDICATE ……. Vacation Elective (Priority Order) – Name and Number of the Elective – Faculty, Course Length Neurology Clerkship

SCHEDULING List 4 Priorities Every attempt will be made to register students for their first priority … When more students request a course than available openings … Lottery...

SCHEDULING NOTE: Your Schedule must reflect your REQUEST for all four weeks of Option Periods: (Indicate Vacation, Elective, or Neurology Clerkship)

SCHEDULING - TIMELINE Complete the White copy of the Scheduling Request Form Make a copy for yourself Sign, Date Submit by May 22 to Cherie Forsyth, Year 3/4 Registrar

SCHEDULING - TIMELINE Address Specific Problems during Open Enrollment Time: – Meet with Cherie Forsyth after schedule done to “fix it” **Open Enrollment Period Ends on JUNE 5. After that date, all revisions to the Y3 Option Periods require Add/Drop Form**

Graduation Requirements Y3 Clerkships + 4-Week Neurology Clerkship Doctoring Requirements – Y3 & Y4 30 Weeks of Elective Credit Pass Step 1 Record a score for Step 2 (CK & CS) Take CCX (administered early in Y4) --- must pass or pass remediation

Electives in Year Three - Credit Electives begin on Monday End on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday – at the discretion of the faculty Holidays during electives – at discretion of faculty

Course Attendance Attendance IS REQUIRED at all elective activities unless prior arrangements have been made with faculty – Elective Faculty may approve brief absences during the elective, but they are not required to do so. At the discretion of the faculty, extra make-up work may be required or reduced credit may be assigned. **ASK EARLY**

EVALUATIONS Performance Evaluation for Electives Satisfactory; Incomplete or Unsatisfactory UNS stays on transcript Incomplete becomes Unsatisfactory if not completed Unsatisfactory on transcript can affect licensure to practice medicine! (Non-Cognitive Behavior forms too)

ADVISING Advisors are NOT required for Year 3 – but faculty are available from each clinical department if you have questions.

Logbooks in Year Three All Electives with a Clinical Component require students to maintain a logbook of patient encounters.

Individually-Designed Electives The Individually-Designed Elective (IDE) option is available to students who are interested in a course or topic for which a regular elective does not exist IDEs will be considered only under special circumstances, and must be with SIU faculty For further information regarding ID Electives, please refer to the Y3 Policies and Procedures and talk with Chris Reavis or Cherie Forsyth.

POLICY FOR ALL ELECTIVES….. Will not receive credit unless enrolled before start of course Not allowed to drop after course has started

Student Feedback You MUST submit course feedback to receive credit for your elective Faculty rely on your feedback to make changes for future students taking their elective. Feedback Reports from Academic Years through are on the Year Three website (Use username and password)

FROM THE STUDENT HANDBOOK: Passage of the USMLE, Step 1 is required for graduation from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. All students are required to take the exam and record a score prior to beginning Year Three. BEFORE JULY 6, 2015: YOU MUST TAKE USMLE STEP 1
