There are 3 Language Arts options at the Junior Level. Junior English Advanced Junior English AP Language and Composition

3 Pathways to Choose From? Each of the 3 pathways at the junior year have corresponding suggestions for the senior year. However, there is always an option for students to extend themselves and try for something more. When in doubt, ask your English teacher for a suggested course of action…

First Pathway - Junior English: A survey of American Literature from colonial times to the present with an emphasis on multi-modal writing. Major American authors are studied. Students must pass the statewide writing test at this level in order to graduate. Senior English – Option 1: Senior English offers a variety of literary selections from Britain, America, and the world. Students will refine writing and oral communication, as well as reading skills. Students will also be expected to connect literature to different art forms and life experiences. Speeches and basic essays are required. College Prep English – Option 2: This course is for the college bound senior. The areas of study include British and world literature, with some study in art, history, and philosophy. College composition instruction is an integral part of the course. Speeches are required. Ask your Junior English teacher if this course would be right for you.

2 nd Pathway - Advanced Junior English: This is a college prep class, designed for students with above average reading and writing skills. The course is a survey of American literature from colonial times to the present. Emphasis is on analytical and evaluative reading and writing, SAT Preparation, research, and public speaking. College Prep English – Option 1: This course is for the college bound senior. The areas of study include British and world literature, with some study in art, history, and philosophy. College composition instruction is an integral part of the course. Speeches are required. Humanities – Option 2: Areas of study include literature, applied psychology, philosophy, art, and history. Writing, speaking, and project assignments require creative and rigorous thinking. The research process is an integral part of this course. Those wishing to earn an Arts & Comm. Focused Program of Study must take Humanities.

3 rd Pathway - AP Language & Comp: AP Lang is a college level course taught in high school to prepare for the AP exam. Students read and analyze mostly non-fiction writings, while honing expository composition skills. Discussions about literature and writing require critical and creative thinking. Teacher approval is required. AP Literature – Option 1: AP Literature and Comp is a college level course taught to engender perceptive, interpretive reading and writing that is analytical and insightful. Discussion circles are used to explore literature collaboratively. Preparation for the AP Literature and Composition exam is stressed. Humanities – Option 2: Humanities is an honors course.
