POPULATION What the facts?

Australian Population Trends  Increasing Population  In the 12 months to June 2009, Australia’s population increased by 443,100 people.  Natural increase from increased fertility (birth ) rate and inceased life expectancy.  Immigration (Net Overseas Migration)  Ageing Population  Refer to Population Pyramid to see increase in proportion of older Australians aged 65 and over, due to higher life expectancy and decrease in proportion of persons aged under 15 years due to reduced fertility rate

Immigration  Net overseas migration (immigration less emigration) around 230,000 to 250,000 persons.  Department of Immigration and Citizenship estimates N.O.M. will fall by 20 percent (56,000) in due to changes in migration policies and economic conditions.  Immigration: permanent, temporary or humanitarian. Permanent migration skilled migrants 115,000, family 56,000. Temporary inc. working holiday makers 194,103, overseas students 320,368 & skilled temp 117,247. Humanitarian: 13,507.

Illegal immigrants  Are living in Australia without a visa. The majority of illegal immigrants arrive by aeroplane, were granted a visa previously and have over-stayed their visa.  Asylum Seekers are not illegal immigrants. According the UN 1951 Refugee Convention cases of asylum seekers must considered and only if the UNHCR determines that the person is not a refugee can the person be deported.
