TODAY, YOU WILL BE INVESTIGATING THE IMMIGRATION ISSUE IN EUROPE. o WHAT ARE THE POPULATION CHARACTERISTICS OF EUROPE? o HOW DOES IMMIGRATION AFFECT THEIR POPULATION CHARACTERISTICS? o WHY ARE PEOPLE EMIGRATING? o WHAT COUNTRIES SEE THE MOST IMMIGRATION, WHY? o HOW DOES THE BORDER SETUP OF EUROPEAN COUNTRIES AFFECT IMMIGRATION PATTERNS? o WHAT ARE PEOPLE OF EUROPE’S VIEW OF THIS? o HOW DOES THEIR IMMIGRATION COMPARE TO THE UNITED STATES?
The population of Europe is 742.5 million o The population of the United States is 316.1 million
The UK is expected to overtake Germany and France as Europe’s most populated country in 50 years time. British birthrate is now one of the highest in Western Europe at 1.91 children. The average age of The British population is younger than most European countries at 39. Across the EU’s countries there are 4 people for every person over 65, but by 2060 that will be 2:1.
Asylum Seekers (seeking safety) o Must make a claim in the country they are immigrating to, but this status has not been fully evaluated. o If they are not truly a refugee, they can face being deported. o If there are many immigrants coming from the same countries where there have been conflict or persecution, they can not be fully interviewed and are usually granted refugee status.
Schengen Agreement eliminated controls at their common borders. Most Asylum seekers really want to reach Europe’s Northern, wealthier countries like Germany and the UK. o For example, if a migrant is processed in Greece, he is now a Greece problem even though in that migrant is probably seeing Greece as a stepping stone. o Greece spent 63 million to help with illegal immigration, only 3 million came from EU patrols Some say countries should be required to share the load of these immigrants.
France has increased its birthrates with new family policies and support for working women. o The more French babies = more French culture o France has outlawed the wearing of hijab (veils). Some say that positive net migration would be the only population growth factor over the next 50 years, but even that may not counterbalance the natural change.
