3 3 OBJECTIVE To shed lights on the status of data concerning international migration based on the UN-Recommendations on Statistics of International Migration, Rev.1, while: 1.Reconsidering the recommended tabulations 2.Exposing the available tabulations

4 4 DATA GROUPS Recommended tabulations divided into data groups based on types of data : 1.Statistics on inflows and outflows of international migrants 2.Stock data (place of birth data/citizenship data) 3.Asylum-seekers and refugees statistics

20 20 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS (1) To understand the dynamics of international migration, its causes and consequences certain crucial questions should be asked and answered, among them the following: Overall net gain/net loss of population through international migration? Annually admitted international migrants? Countries of origin? Citizens emigrating every year? Countries of destination? Emigrants citizens returning every year? From which countries? Migrant workers admitted annually? Persons searching for asylum arriving annually? Refugees? Total number of international migrants in the country? How many are economically active?

21 21 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS (2) Current status of international migration statistics in the ESCWA region: If data is ever available, it is not all disseminated Most available migration data are on immigrants and not emigrants
