Introduction to Engineering

Engineering (defined) 1.The art of applying scientific and mathematical principles, experience, judgment, and common sense to make things that benefit people. 2.The process of producing a technical product or system to meet a specific need

A. Engineering Disciplines 1. Aerospace engineering Designing and developing technology for commercial aviation, the national defense, and space exploration

2. Agricultural engineering Designing farm and food processing equipment; crop storage systems, livestock buildings; and developing systems for drainage, irrigation, and waste disposal 3. Architectural engineering Focusing on the safety, cost and construction methods and documents for the design of a building

4. Bioengineering/Biomedical engineering Combines biology and engineering in working to develop medical instruments, artificial organs and prosthetic devices 5. Ceramic engineering Deals with processes that convert clay, non-metallic minerals, or silicates to ceramic products such as automobile parts, tiles for the space shuttle and solar panels

6. Chemical engineering Processing and treating of liquids, gases, polymer formation 7. Civil engineering One of the largest branches of engineering, civil engineering is a field that deals with building bridges, dams roads and other structures. They plan, design and supervise water treatment centers and sanitation plants.

8. Computer engineering Deals with all aspects of computer systems including design, construction and operation, some specialize in areas like digital systems, operating systems, computer networks and software. 9. Electrical engineering This discipline employs the largest number of engineers and covers every field related to electrical devices, systems, and the use of electricity

10. Environmental engineering Assists with the development of water distribution systems, recycling methods, sewage treatment plants and other pollution control systems in the water, air and land. 11. Fire protection engineering Designing systems and equipment that prevent or combat fire

12. Industrial engineering Organizing the people, information, energy, materials involved in the production process 13. Manufacturing engineering Designing tools and equipment, while working with all aspects of manufacturing from production control and material handling to mechanization and automation

14. Mechanical engineering Designing machines such as engines and motors with the understanding of mechanics and energy principles 15. Metallurgy and Materials engineering Extracting, refining, processing, and combining to manufacture natural substances to create new materials that are stronger, lighter, and/or resist corrosion. This discipline developed stealth technology

16. Mineral and Mining Engineering Locating, removing, and appraising minerals found in the earth Designing, developing and controlling power plants (fixed and mobile) and medical purposes that use nuclear energy. 17. Nuclear Engineering

18. Ocean Engineering Directing the exploration and utilization of the ocean’s resources 19. Safety Engineering An engineering discipline that deals with the safety of equipment operation, machine design, ergonomics, and industrial operations

20. Transportation Engineering Designing, streets, highways, and other transit systems to allow people and goods to move safely and efficiently (A sub-discipline of civil engineering)

B. Engineering Technology Disciplines Deals more with the practical hands-on aspects of engineering 1. Chemical Engineering Technology Operating chemical plants that produce plastics pharmaceuticals, food products, synthetic rubber and synthetic fibers

2. Civil and Construction Engineering Technology Overseeing the construction of facilities that are essential to modern life. These facilities include high-rise buildings, roads, mass transit systems, canals, water treatment facilities, dams, bridges, and airports

3. Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology Responsible for creating technologies which include microwave ovens, computers, automation technology, and communications. 4. Electromechanical Engineering Technology A field which designs and builds systems which have integrated computer, electrical, hydraulic and mechanical components

5. Manufacturing Engineering Technology A more practical approach to engineering 6. Mechanical Engineering Technology A program of study designed to prepare persons for work in mechanical and manufacturing labs

7. Materials Engineering Technology A program of study which can lead to a variety of work in the materials science and materials engineering fields.
