Try to imagine that if you haven’t friends, what would your life be like? Warming up Questions Work in pairs Answer freely Difficulties when speaking poor content poor vocabulary Solution Words with variety interesting topics Rich input (reading &listening )

Listening to conversations (input) W: So, let me get this right---you don’t have a roommate, a live-in girlfriend, anything? You just live by yourself? Why? M: I find it easier this way. Being by myself means I can do what I want. It’s lonely sometimes, of course. Q: According to the man, what is the advantage of living alone? A. freedom B. Simple life C. More time D. Quiet life Listening skills (Output-driven Strategies) Preparation before listening Predict the answer Focus on the content, not the language

Listening to conversations Step1 Listening for the general meaning. Step2 Listening for the specific details. Step3 Check the answer and learn new words Output-driven Practice It requires rich input in and out of class: reading related materials, remembering new words, and listening, which prepares for better output.

Speaking and Listening (input & output) Take notes as you listen to a passage. And use your notes to write a summary, choosing one of the given sentences to begin. Task1 Find out three reasons why having roommates is bad. 1. Having a roommate causes one to be dependent. 2. Having a roommate is a nuisance. 3. Having a roommate means that you cannot be totally free to do what you want. Theory basis: Noticing Hypothesis (schmidt,1990) Listening skill: Note-taking (Output-driven Strategies) Title: My Roommates, My Friends? Develop students’ critical thinking ability (Output- driven Practice) Disadvantages of roommates Listen

Speaking and Listening Task 2 Write a summary with one of the opening sentences provided and present it in class. Listen again The speaker believes that having a roommate has three negative consequences. Having a roommate is something to be avoided. Discussion: Work in groups Presentation (Output-driven Strategies) 1. Structure of the listening material 2. Comparison between situations (before and after) 3. Your own comments Theory basis---Scaffolding (vygotsky)

Cultural Talk Terry, who is from the United States, is talking about roommates. Watch the video carefully and compare it with your own culture. A combination of visual and auditory input and output Great interest Critical thinking Comparison Privacy & Independent in American culture The whole class is divided into two big groups, and have a debate over the issue whether having roommates is bad or not.

Assignment Prepare a 3-minute oral report on one of the following topics or any other topic related to what you have learned in this unit. You will be asked to present your report in the next class. 1) The best/ worst roommate I’ve ever had 2) Lessons a person could learn from having a roommate 3) Humans live in groups Listening and Presentation Task 1 Listen to our textbook after class, from page 76 to page 78. Task 2 Conclusion: Input is what is available to learners. Intake is what is internalized by learners. Practice (Listening, reading)---intake---output (speaking, writing)
