Skills building 1: Listening for key words While listening to a lecture or a news report, do you always have to pay attention to every word the speaker uses?

6 When your teacher is speaking, it is important to listen carefully for key words. Key words are the most important words in a sentence or paragraph. Teachers often use key words when giving useful hints about homework or tests. Below is some useful information on how to listen for key words.

7 1. Key words are often stressed.
2. There is often a pause before a key word. 3. Key words are often repeated. 4. Key words are often given in a summary.

should mention the author of the story as well as its title. You should also write what category the story belongs to. It is important to mention where the story is set, as this helps put

reader can understand. So in Paragraph One, you need to mention the author, the title, the category and the setting of the story. In the next paragraph, you should give a brief summary of the plot. You can also

12 describe the important characters in the story

Be sure to give examples from the text. So in Paragraph Three, you should discuss the themes and the symbols. In the last paragraph of your review, you are expected to write your personal opinion of the story. You should say why you like it or why you don’t. Would you recommend it to a friend? Your personal opinion and rate of the story could be given at the end.

25 When you write a review, you should remember the following:
A review is usually written in the simple present tense, but sometimes we can also use the present perfect tense. A review should follow a set outline.

26 You can use the following outline as an example.
Paragraph One Mention the title and the author of the story. Mention the genre of the story. Describe where the story is set.

27 Paragraph Two Give a brief outline of the plot without giving away the ending. Describe the important characters in the story. Discuss any character development.

The author, Jerry Johnson, uses the old and new things, like the old home-made ball and the new soccer ball, and the old bench and the new sneakers as symbols. The old things symbolize the most valuable thing, friendship, which needs to be cherished. I think this story is really good and I strongly recommend it to all of you.
