Did you ever want to do something unique or different? Why not invent something? First of all, you should know that there is a reason that not everyone is an inventor – it’s not exactly as easy as 1, 2, 3. You need to find your creative side and go for it. I’ve made this process of inventing into easy steps.

1. Make a product. To make an invention you obviously need an idea for a new invention, a new kind of product, or some sort of useful idea. If you want to invent something you need an idea. If you haven’t already come up with something remember that inspiration is everywhere. For example, if you see a kid in a wheel chair who has trouble keeping up with his friends. Your inspiration a new and modified wheel chair. To make sure you don’t lose any of your ideas, keep a notebook with you to jot down your ideas.

2. Find out if someone has already invented this product or a very similar one. It will be a complete waste if you build something someone has already made. This will also be a problem when you go to try and get a patent. You can find out if someone has already come up with the idea and patented it by searching it on the patent data base in places like The United States Patent and Trademark Office.

3. Build a prototype to see if your product really works. No one will buy a product that doesn’t work and you will waste money making it and trying to get a patent. Sometimes it takes a while to get what works on paper or in your mind a while to work in real life, so don’t give up.

4. Get a patent so no one can copy your idea. A patent is a legal document, which allows you sell the product, and commercially exploit it. To get a patent your invention has to meet some criteria. First of all, it has to be useful. It cannot be just a new design for something that already exists, it cannot be something such as a book or song, or something that occurs naturally that you did not have to change. It has to be a process, product, or compassion. It must be new and unlike something done before. It needs to be a unique or thought-out solution, not an obvious solution to an obvious problem. You can get a patent from the Patent Office called IP in Canberra, Australia. To do this you will have to fill out a application. The office then decides if your invention meets the criteria. Once you get a standard patent you will have it for 20 years.

5. Make the invention, so that you can sell it yourself, or have a company make the product for you. Normally to get your product to sell you will need to do some commercializing. This and making your product can cost lots of money so it might be a good idea to save up so you don’t go bankrupt before anyone even knows about your product. If you want a third party company to make the product for you, you will need to find out what kinds of companies will be interested. If you find a company that wants to sell your product be sure to secure a contract with them. This will be especially important if you still want full ownership of your product.
