Academic Compensation Masters of Advanced Studies Overview March 29, 2011

Academic Compensation Masters of Advanced Study 2 Masters of Advanced Study (MAS) teaching may be assigned to Academic Senate faculty in one of two ways: 1.Regular Workload No additional compensation 2.Overload Teaching Additional compensation

Academic Compensation Masters of Advanced Study 3 Regular Workload: Senate Faculty 1.Fee revenue is used to “buy out” faculty member’s regular course 1/6 th of faculty member’s annual state funding is replaced by fee revenue (equivalent to 50% for one quarter) Released state funding is managed according to divisional faculty leverage buyout guidelines 2.Fee revenue is used to hire a temporary instructor for faculty member’s regular course Faculty member paid 100% on state-funding Temporary instructor is hired and paid with fee revenue  Only one MAS course per year may be taught as assigned course load  Course evaluations must be submitted with next academic review file

Academic Compensation Masters of Advanced Study 4 Overload Teaching: Senate Faculty Fee revenue is used to pay additional compensation to the faculty member Amount determined by approved fee structure Consulting days must be forfeited (APM 025) Must fulfill assigned course load (no course relief)  Limit of two overload courses per year (all campuses)  Only Senate faculty are eligible for overload compensation

Academic Compensation Masters of Advanced Study 5 Temporary Instructors: Non-Senate Faculty Instructors of record must be hired under an appropriate instructional title according to established policies and procedures: Lecturer (Unit 18) Instructional Workload Credit (IWC) value must be set by divisional/school deans. A regular course has an IWC of 1.0 which equates to a 33% appointment for one quarter. Visiting Professor Adjunct Professor Distinguished Practitioner (pending)  Non-Senate faculty may not teach on overload basis

Academic Compensation Masters of Advanced Study 6 Compensation Structure for Overload Payments May be based on:  Fee revenue  Programmatic considerations  Other factors Scope of work and # hours must be specified. Use of sliding scale (e.g. $100 - $500 per podium hour) is recommended. Must include provisions/contingencies for low enrollment and course cancellation.  Must be pre-approved by the Senior Vice Chancellor

Academic Compensation Masters of Advanced Study 7 Informational Resources MAS compensation guidelines and detailed payroll instructions will be posted on the Academic Compensation website: Divisional/school academic personnel contacts can advise on setting the Instructional Workload Credit (IWC) values necessary for temporary instructors.
