Florida International University G51 I & R Reporting April 28, 2006

I&R Reporting Deals with Direct and Indirect Instructional Effort – i.e., the “12-hour rule” Does not cover research unless externally funded or separately budgeted for cost share on externally funded research Does not cover the full range of a faculty member’s assignment

Reporting Direct Instructional Effort Course CreditsEffort 1.08 2.17 3.25 4.33 5.42 6.50

Reporting Direct Instructional Effort Class Size Adjustments If the class is less than 100 – no adjustment If the class is between 100 and 199 – maximum effort for 3 credits is 0.37 If the class is more than 199 – maximum effort for 3 credits is 0.5 and three additional contact hours must be assigned to the class

Reporting Direct Instructional Effort Non-classroom Instruction Type of CourseMax. Contact Hrs per Student Max. Percent Effort/Student Thesis/Dissertation Chair Member 1.0.33.083.027 Directed Individual Studies.5.041 Supervision of Student Interns.8.067 Total Effort cannot exceed 100% these values may need to be adjusted proportionately to keep within that maximum.

I&R Screen

Reporting Direct Instructional Effort Overload for Full-Time Faculty Calculation of FTE is based on percent overload payment is to 9-month salary FTE is preloaded by Institutional Research Percent effort must add to 100% on any form –If one course, 100% for that course –If three courses, 33% for each course, etc.

Reporting Direct Instructional Effort Part-Time Faculty FTE for adjunct calculated by dividing the number of courses paid from a single account by 4. For more than four courses, the FTE is 1.0 Effort must add to 100% on any form –One course: FTE=0.25; Effort = 1.0 –Three courses: FTE=0.75; Effort =.33/course –More than four courses: FTE=1.0; Effort = 1/(number of courses) per course

Reporting Non-Instructional Effort For research that is not externally funded and is not reported as separately budgeted cost- sharing on externally funded research, no more than 0.1 FTE can be assigned to research activities All remaining effort should be spent on other instructional effort, advising, public service, etc.

I&R Screen

Recommended Practices Cancelled classes must be removed by the end of the third week of the term or they will be loaded into the I&R files and create massive edits Every class must be assigned a primary instructor of record. Must be done before the end of the third week

Individual students must be assigned to the faculty member actually supervising them – no more assignment of internships, directed study, etc. to one department chair or coordinator Pay keys need to be assigned by units for all faculty activities involving multiple funding sources Recommended Practices

I&R Screen
